[concours] E-Type Hoods and Differential

Does anyone on this list know whether crushed vinyl or fabric/mohair is
the more appropriate hood/top material for a Series 1 E-Type OTS?
What colors were acceptable?
Were specific exterior-interior color combinations recognized for those
hoods whose fabric was one color outside and another color on the inner
surface?
Was the crushed vinyl always black?

I have seen black, tan and dark blue fabric hoods but am not aware of
documentation which validates any of them. One local friend believes
that the crushed vinyl is more proper on the Series 2 and subsequent
cars.

Separate topic:
Series 1 E-Type differentials and cages color - Black?

All qualified opinions and possible sources appreciated.

Thanks, Dick Cavicke

Dick,

For concours S1, the only acceptable fabric is Hartz cloth or Hartz-like
cloth. No vinyl, as it didn’t appear until S2 (always black). The underside
of the cloth tops were a light tan/(off-white?) color that came fairly
close to matching the canopy (metal pan at front of top frame). I believe
the current crop of undersides are usually a little lighter in shade.

Regarding the cage, it’s black.

My S2 was fairly original when I got it and the top frame for the hood
is actually a greenish gray color. I had some paint computer matched
off the underside of one of the mounting brackets and the paint store
commented on how much green was actually in the color.

It looks grey in some light and greenish-gray in others.

George,

When I was referring to the canopy, I meant the cloth on the canopy and underside
of the top. Naturally, the metal canopy is the same color as the hood sticks, but
you can’t see it once it’s covered. The green/gray is kind of funny. You look at
it sunlight and looks gray. Look at it under flourescent lights and it looks a
lot more green.
