[concours] JCNA proposal for 54 Concours rule changes

In reply to a message from Peddlarbob sent Tue 26 Feb 2013:

I’ve been removed from the JCNA concours scene for some time,
mostly on account of health and family issues but it does seem that
the competitive nature of these events can bring out the worst in
good people at times (nothing to do with George). As much as I love
the pursuit of originality and love to share what I’ve learned from
and to people like those on this forum, the thought of arguing over
a bolt or a fingerprint seems patently absurd. Concours shouldn’t
be like some sports are today - everyone receiving a trophy and a
hug - but the whole point is to help those who desire to improve
their cars to do so in a way that promotes comraderie within the
hobby. Concours is eventually going to be the forum for a
diminishing few who have the skill and means to accurately restore
their XKs to levels that are required today and are willing to
submit to such review. There is no such thing as a perfect car,
particularly an XK, but there shouldn’t be an increasingly
difficult threshold to be a part of Championship Class, or any
other class, based on one judge’s ability to recognize minutae over
another’s. If we get to the point where a very early 150 is
challenged for having a TW spanner as opposed to a Garrington, we
are doomed (even given that such a problem can be easily addressed
by the owner).

Given the inevitable differences in judges’ expertise and scrutiny,
is this a issue those of us in JCNA can solve? It’s certainly one
that Dick C. and others have been trying to address for years.
Judging manuals would help - and yes I did start the XK150 one some
years ago and got through a few sections gut then things went to
poop around here. Was heading toward 120 pages with photos.

Haven’t seen my DHC for years. Know that she still runs well
though…–
