[concours] Judging tire size on 1996 XJS

I plan to purchase (5, five) summer high performance tires
for south florida weather. The original tire size was
225/60/16.
I plan to install 236/55/16, … Will I receive a
deduction for the change in sizes?–
Inskip
–Posted using Jag-lovers JagFORUM [forums.jag-lovers.org]–

In JCNA Driven divisions there are no deductions when the substituted
tire has only a profile difference. The wheel diameter, however, must remain
as original at 16 inches.
In Champion divisions the tire size and profile must remain as originally
supplied by Jaguar, 225-60-16. Since the 1996 XJS is now over 15 years old,
a tire with a speed rating other than the original ZR such as a VR may be
substituted without deduction.

Yes. You will receive a deduction. The tire appendix to the rule book
shows the 1996 XJS as being originally fitted with 225/60ZR16 tires. The
tire size must match that originally provided by Jaguar. The tire speed
rating must be equal or superior to the original. This is discussed in
Chapter 6, page 12 of the Rule Book. This is available on line under the
Concours tab at www.jcna.com.

Rule Change as of the 2013 AGM:
Page VI-12, Section n.3
Tire Speed Ratings: Tires on Champion and Driven Division cars less than 15
years old must have original speed ratings or speed ratings equal to or
superior to the original. (see Appendix B).
1996 is, by my reckoning, 18 years ago so speed rating is a non-deductible
for this entrant.

I believe the answer depends on whether the car is shown in Champion
Division or Driven Division.

If shown in Champion Division you should receive a deduction for the
non-standard tire sizes. If shown in Driven Division you should not
receive a deduction.

Thank you for your responses. I will be entering the
auto in the Champion division.
It would seem if I must get the correct size and rating,
to not receive a deduction.

So, let me ask this…

What high performance, summer tire can be purchased for
the size 225/60/16?
I do not want an all-season tire if I able to choose.

Tire Rack has very small choice in that size, and the
tires they offer are not rated for a heavy car and wear
quickly. There is a large number of summer tires in the
225/55/16, but with concours deduction.–

Inskip,

I can help you on this list with what the JCNA Concours Rules Book says,

but I can’t tell you where to find the correct tires in today’s market
place.

What I have now on our 1990 XJ-S convertible won't be any help to you

because it has 15 inch wheels.

I recommend that you try posting your question about where to get the

tire size and speed rating that you want on the XJ-S list and see what
others with a 1996 XJS have purchased lately that meets your needs.

Entrant is download and read the entire JCNA Concours Rule Book from cover
to cover before the concours. I wish that all our Entrants were familiar
with the rules BEFORE concours day, but that is not what happens.

Good luck with your concours.

Inskip,

One more thing. I just noticed that your email below says “correct size
and rating”.

Because your 1996 XJS is greater than 15 years old, it does not require
the equivalent or greater tire speed rating.

What you need are radial tires that match the tire size in page 8 of
Appendix B of the 2014 Concours Rule book for your car (225/60R16).

Inskip,

Whatever tires you get, purchase five and get them all mounted. In
Champion Division the spare tire and wheel are judged and there are sizeable
deductions if the spare tire or wheel doesn’t match the road wheels… This
is covered in chapter VI of the Concours Rule Book.
