[concours] Leather restoration

Has anyone used a product from www.leatherique.com? The leather
seats in my XJS are a little dry and I would like them to have a
softer feel. Are there any other recommendation?–

Leatherique is very good. Patience is required, though. It took years for
the leather to harden. It’ll take repeat applications of Leatherique over a
period of weeks or even months to soften it. I suggest cleaning the leather
first with their “Pristine Clean” product.

I’ve also used a mixture of lanolin and neat’s-foot oil on hardened leather.
I got somewhat faster results but its rather messy.

I’ve used their products for years. They have a rejuvenator oil which you
apply (rub in with hands) and allow to soak in for a few days. The oil
softens the leather but, more importantly, brings all the years of
contamination out to the surface. You then rub on their Pristine Clean with
a rag and scrub off the contaminants. Pristine Clean is what you then
continue to use periodically to keep the leather looking new. They also
sell excellent water-based dye which is very easy to apply and they can
match any color from a sample. They also sell a product to repair cracked
leather but I have no experience with it.

Currently using Pinnacle products with good results on some very tough
restorations with very good results. Multiple applications and patience as
Doug suggests is great advice.----- Original Message -----

I should have been more specific. My XJS received 99.6 points at
the last Jag concours. The only area I was graded down on was small
surface cracks on the drivers seat and some wear on the piping also
on the drivers seat. Other than that the leather looks like new but
does not feel as supple as the leather I had in my 1969 XKE. Will
this product soften the leather?–

Don’t take mine as the final word on the but my experience is that the
leather used in E-types is thinner and softer than leather used in
XJSs…sorta like a lady’s expensive leather dress gloves versus heavy,
thick leather work gloves, if ya get what I mean.

The work gloves might be in terrific condition but they’ll never feel as
soft as the expensive dress gloves.

G’day,Leatherique will soften your seats,probably 2 or 3
applications 3 or 4 days apart, the best method I’ve used is to cover
the seats in black garbage bags to help sauna them and open the
pores. After the 3rd application clean with prestine clean, then
have them mix up the colour die to match your seats and piping mix
some die in the crack filler apply to cracks after which use the
preppi g agent and then the die it works well on the cracks and the
piping. If your seats have been recoloured before check them for
colourfastness in a not easy to see spot.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
I used products from:
http://www.lederzentrum.de/international.php.

I was really impressed with their softener oil. Initially I thought
that my seats would need complete recovering, as the leather was
like cardboard. Here are a few pics of my front seat resto:
http://picasaweb.google.de/JagWaugh1968/Seats#

They also offer a touch up dye kit, which sounds like what you
might be interested in, as it is to touch up minor wear marks and
such.

There is only one way to go here, it is cheap, highly successful,
and WORKS!.. purchase some neatsfoot oil from your local cobbler,
purchase some ANhydrous lanolin from any good compounding pharmacy,
Now create a 50/50 mix by warming up the lanolin in the microwave
( take the lid off the jar first!) and adding it to the neatsfoot
oil, allow the mixture to cool… you will end up with a gooey
substance that has the consistency of chicken fat. Now get the
interior of the car HOT in the sunshine and slather the bejesus out
of it on the leather, DO NOT RUB! leave it to soak for a day. now
CAREFULLY with a clean white terrytowel remove any excess. REPEAT
the procedure 3 or 4 times. THIS IS IMPORTANT. The leather will
initially darken slightly this is purely because it is wet, the
original color will return don’t worry. This process is CHEAP, IT
WORKS! AND THE MOTOR PRODUCT MANUFACTURERS DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW!
I have used this formula on Jaguar leather since 1976 without
failure. I have also NEVER lost a single point on any interior so
treated in the entire time. best of luck.–

Hallo Everybody,
I checked Leatherique website and the products look great.
Unlukilly bringing those products to Italy is very expensive
and takes a lot of time in customs.
Does anybody know if Leatherique is sold by any European
dealer?–

Thank you everybody.
Bad luck struck the cat and now a gearbox overhaul is due, so
leather restoration is no longer a priority.
I saw liquid leather ad: www.liquidleather.com which looks
cheaper and easier to use (at least product explanations are
easier to understand…)
Anybody tried this brand on cracked leather?–

This is for keeping the leather soft and supple. A second product is used for filling in cracks. A third product is used for dying the leather.
