[concours] Location of Engine Number?

I am submitting for a heritage certificate for a '90 XJ-S V12.
Can anyone tell me the location of the engine number and if
can be seen without extensive part removal?–

It’s located at the rear of the block top center. See the following link:

Perhaps… perhaps not…

The engine number on your 5.3L V12 engine is a little difficult to see. It
is located on the top rear of the engine block in the center, just aft of
the oil pressure sensor, right in front of the firewall. I have a spare V12
engine in my barn and learned exactly where to look. Then I was able to see
this number on the 5.3L V12 engine in my V12 VdP while I was doing some
recent engine maintenance. However, I have never been able to see the
number on the 5.3L V12 engine in my 1990 XJ-S convertible due to the
assortment of wires, hoses and other engine items in the way.

One alternative solution to taking things apart may be to get something like
one of those 2.4" LCD Digital Inspection Cameras that Harbor Freight sells.
It’s Lot # 67979 on sale for $69.99. I have been looking for an excuse to
get a new tool (toy ?) like it but haven’t had the justification yet.

BTW, I have no affiliation with Harbor Freight other than as a satisfied
customer.

Thank you. I will try the inspection camera and post the
results.

This also is a convertible and I was not able to get a clear
look at the number with a flashlight.

Many thanks,

I “cleaned out the V” and removed everything including the throttle tower
pedestal, wires, cap, coils, and everything else right after I got the 1990
XJ-S convertible in 2005. It’s a shame that I didn’t record the engine
serial number while everything was apart or removed from the car.

Paul, Geoff,

Many thanks. The LCD inspection camera worked great. I was
able to capture both the engine number and the gearbox
number.

Greg,

I decided to take my own advice and get one of those LCD inspection

cameras from Harbor Freight. I waited until they were on sale and I also
had a 20% off coupon burning a hole in my wallet.

I now know for the first time what the serial number is on the 5.3L V12

engine in our 1990 XJ-S convertible. I had to do a little cleaning of that
area on top of the engine near the firewall, but that was some great advice
I gave.
