[concours] Re: [Concours] Judging tire size on 1996 XJS

Remember, summer only tires are formulated from softer compounds that are most
suited to the slalom or race track where maximized stick-factor and g-force
are more important than longevity.
I thought you were most interested in Concours?
Michelin Pilots are available in correct size and are Z rated and, of course,
more expensive.
Good luck,

PAUL… THANKS… I have become fully immersed in reading
the JCNA Concours rule book. And yes, thanks for
reminding me to also include the spare tire in my
purchasing decision.
I also started reading the XJ-S 1972-1991 judging guide.
I hope, that the facelift 1992-1996 models will have there
own judging guide.
And thanks Hal for the Michelin Defender 225-60R-
16,recommendation. It is a all-weather tire, and I was
looking for summer tires only.

Inskip,

I have no knowledge of concours rules but I think I know a
little bit about XJS specification (at least here in the
UK).

1996 4.0 XJS convertibles were fitted as standard with
Touring Suspension and 1996 4.0 Coupes were fitted as
standard with Sports Suspension. Cars fitted with Touring
Suspension had 225/60 tyres. Cars with Sports Suspension
had 225/55 tyres.

In a slight comparison, 1996 6.0 Convertibles and Coupes all
had Sports Suspension, so all 1996 6.0 XJSs had 225/55
tyres.

However, it was an option to specify Sports Suspension on
4.0 convertibles or Touring Suspension on 4.0 Coupes. It
was also an option to have Touring Suspension fitted to any
6.0 XJS. That means that a number of Convertibles left the
factory with 225/55 tyres. So it seems that 225/55 tyres
should be acceptable fitment to a concours judge.

I don’t know if concours judges therefore have to check the
type of suspension fitted to know which is the correct tyre
size that should be fitted to the car, or whether they
should just accept either 225/60 or 225/55 tyres.

Just a thought. I hope that helps.

Hello Paul et al,
All 1996 XJS imported into the USA have 4.0, 6 cylinder
engines and had touring suspensions with no option for an upgrade to
“Sports”. The only tire available as factory delivered was the 225-60R-16.
Only the XJ Sedans were still orderable here in the USA with the 12-cylinder
engine in 1996.

Hal

Thank you for clarifying that. As you will appreciate, I
know more about UK specs!

Without wishing to hijack the thread, is it only 1996 USA
XJS convertibles that didn’t have the option to specify
Sports Suspension as an option? Was it still an option in
1994 and 1995?

Tks

Hi Paul et al,
In 1994 the XJS was available in 6 & 12 cyl models. The 6 cyl was
available with the Sport package and 225-55VR-16 rubber. The non-Sport 6 cyl
XJS came with 235-60ZR-15 tires. The 12 cyl model came with 225-60ZR-16
tires. Confused yet?
The Sport option with the 6 cyl was not continued into 1995 but the 12 cyl
XJS was fitted with 225-55VR-16 for its last year in the USA.

Hi Hal,

It sounds like US cars are just as confusing as UK cars, but
in a different way!

I note what you say, but am slightly confused by the 1995
USA XJS brochure that’s loaded on the site here. That says
that in 1995, the 4 litre cars and 6 litre cars all came
with 225/60 tyres as standard, but that Sports Suspension
and 225/55 tyres were an option on 4 litre Coupes and
Convertibles. That seems to be slightly different to your
post?

Hi Paul,
I and the other members of the JCRC are always ready to review,
correct and accept verifiable evidence which might alter the currently
accepted OEM and Wheel information listed in Appendix B of the JCNA Concours
Rule Book.
A photo of the Tire Recommendation Plate from a 1995 USA XJS would certainly
be suitable evidence to support what you found in the brochure. Recognize
that these marketing brochures may be printed in advance of actual
production and may contain information corrected in later reprints.
Is there anyone with the 1995 XJS model in question reading this discussion
and can examine the Tire Recommendation Plate or the tire listing in your
original owner’s manual?

Hal greetings! In this case we have a bit of an issue in
that most of the tire charts came directly from Jaguar USA.
I think they put them together for JCNA about 8-9 years ago.–
