[concours] Re: Series II bonnet questions

…snip…

  1. The bonnet will be removed and the engine area and wheel wells stripped
and repainted along with the exterior. What finish did the wheel well areas
get from the factory? I don’t want to undercoat but I don’t think they were
    shiny.

That all depends on which car you have, and who was on the
assembly line at the
time…seriously. Generally speaking, the wheel wells
were undercoated, then
painted body colour with the rest of the car, or at least
with the series I cars
this was the case. With the series II cars, there were
various different applications
of undercoat, from none, to a full engine bay mess. I’m
going with just the wheel wells
and top coat for my 63 FHC.

What evidence do you have for the type and treatment of
undercoat on your car
now ? Use that as a guideline.

Mark: Thanks, I know for a fact tha the previous owner undercoated the
wheel well sections of the bonnet, along with the engine bay sections (which
I have since removed) so I have no idea what was original on my car. After
I asked my question I asked I was told of a pebbled rocker panel finish that
is very chip resistant that is sprayed over the primer and then painted. I
may have the shop apply that under the body color in the wheel wells. What
do you think?

Nearly every S2 E-Type that I have seen was undercoated in the wheel
well areas.

The treatment that you are talking about is a sound deadener like 3-M
Rocker Shutz. It is sprayed on over primer or even paint and builds up
to a pebbled sound deadening thickness. It can then be painted over
with body color.

That’s how I did my transmission tunnel and probably what I will do to
the wheel wells.
