[concours] Ser III Heat Shields

Aware that a Ser I XJ6 had stainless and the Ser III, (I have an 83) was
different I communicated with Jaguar and was told that the metal used to
form the heat shield was “an aluminzed finish”. As an owner I know they
do not take kindly to polishing or any upkeep method. Repainting with AL
paint never mimicks the original. If you can find a NOS replacement just
treat it tenderly!!

Dick,
I have two heat shields. I had one chrome plated just to see what it would
look like. It looks a lot like a ser I stainless one. My other heat shield
is painted with a flat aluminum paint. It looks like a clean but worn
original from a distance of 5 feet or so but up close, of course, you can
tell it’s painted. So neither of my shields is original finish and I’m
afraid the concours judges will get me either way. I will see if I can get
my heat shield aluminized somewhere.
Thanks,
John

Dick: the S3 heat shield polishes just fine; it is not coated (what is an
“aluminized finish”? and whoever gave you that information may have been the
same person at Jaguar headquarters who told me that the entire “instrument”
pack had to be changed in the S3 to swap in a new speedometer (which as you
know, takes maybe 3 minutes on a slow day).
