[concours] yellow chromate conversion over cadmium finish

I’m doing a second restoration on my '68 OTS. The first one I did
in stages from 1982 to 1989 on a low mileage original car. But
there were things about the car that don’t mesh entirely with the
JCNA guides. Most of the original GKN bolts on the car were yellow
cad. The guide mentions traces being reported on some bolts. The
brake booster, reaction valve and heater valve cover were also
yellow cad but the guide says they’re cad, without the adjective.
There’s reference in the S2 guide to yellow cadmium reported found
on the inside of the vacuum booster but that the colour wears off
from the outside. Mine didn’t. There seems to be no reference in
any of the JCNA judging guides to the heater valve cover being
yellow cad. Again, mine certainly was.

Just curious.–

Posting this in the JCNA concours or E type section would be the
best place. Both authors watch those forums. I see you quoting the
series 2 guide but did you also check the 1968 guide?

As to yours ‘‘certainly was’’ are you stating you are equally sure it
was never replaced?–

George,
I bought a 68 parts car in 79 or 80, and for what it’s worth when I
rebuilt the booster in 93-94 to use on another car the inside was
plain old silver cad.

I supposed that the CONCOURS forum here would be a good place to
start. Yes, I have been referencing the S1.5 guide and it is very
helpful. It mentions only that traces of yellow cad have been
reported on some bolts.

But no, I can’t be sure. I’m the fifth owner. I can only say what
mine was like when I bought it. The bolts are GKN and they’re
yellow cadmium. They were all over the car so unless the car had
been dismantled and reassembled before my ownership - I am missing
the car’s history before 1972 - it’s a pretty good bet the bolts’
finish is original. The other items are quite possiblly
replacements, although they are otherwise correct parts that were
in the condition one would expect of a 14 year old, unrestored,
essentially rust free vehicle with 52,000 miles on it.

I need to get my fasteners and a hundred other sundry parts
replated. Yellow cadmium is still available locally but expensive,
so I’d just as soon get everything done in clear zinc. It appears
zinc is a viable option without compromising a perception
of ‘‘originality’’ so I think I’ll take it. Thanks.–
