Coupe Rear Side Window Rubbers

Now that I have gleaned a lot of information on the XJ fuel system, the strips down the side and the central locking system it is time to ask a XJ Coupe specific question.

When I lower the drivers side rear window the bottom 3" of the sealing rubber attached the stainless steel trim at the front of the glass catches on the guide rubber at the bottom and pulls out. See the attached vid (I hope) - you need to click on the image and then click play.

When the window goes back up and the door window is up the rubber is pushed back into place but if the drivers window is down, when it is raised it pushes the rubber to the outside and it flaps in the breeze - I put some rubber grease where the rubbers and the glass touch and this helps.

However today when I put the rear window down it ripped the rubber out completely and it got caught in the workings of the window and prevented it from raising. When I got home some probing and got the rubber strip out. Gluing the rubber to the stainless steel trim at the front of the rear window does not work.

I have order all new rubber fittings for both rear side windows and in view of the all up cost I would hate to see them get ripped out again.

Any other Coupe owners had this issue and how did you deal with it.

No Coupe owners on the forum?

I received a full set of window rubbers for both rear windows from Barretts today. They are different to what are on my windows so I assume that in the past an owner did not want to pay the price and used generic rubbers rather than the originals.

Actually the generic rubber could work better than the original if it could be properly secured to the stainless front trim of the rear side window rather than glued which does not work.

I can see all the parts in the parts manual but it does not explain how the parts affix to the window and body - at this stage on only have the Series 2 workshop from Haines but it is pretty useless for a coupe.

So if anyone is able, can someone post some pics of the rubbers on the front of the rear window and and the body?

Also any recommendations from Coupe owners on what is the best workshop manual to get that covers the Coupe adequately - from what I can see most dont.

Thanks

Garry

Sorry nobody replied! Rare cars, so rare owners too. I have one but the windows are down and the car is mostly apart.

The rubber is glued. You need above average glue. 3M weatherstrip adhesive works well when used correctly…. Correctly means apply thin layer to both sides (smear with finger) and let it dry to touch. Then, add a thin bead to one side and immediately join surfaces. That’s good stuff. Second is DAP Weldwood Top and Landau Adhesive. It is the most heat resistant glue.

Finally, I wonder is the “slide” is missing or not doing its job on your car. The slide might be what keeps the rubber from getting caught on the way down, is installed on top of rubber. I don’t know.

. #48 in picture.

Hi John - thanks for that most helpful reply. The 3M product is easily available here in Australia, the DAP not so much so I will get the 3M tomorrow. I was using a specialist product but it seemed to stick every where except on the rubber.

You are correct #48 what you call the slide is missing but I have it in the parts I received. It is what forces its way through the slot on the end cap seal (very very expensive) as the window goes down. I do not have this so the weather strip is not strong enough to go down without peeling off the stainless trim.

The weather strip I have is actually better than the genuine one so I might play around with some thick black rubber I have to copy the slide so safe my expensive new parts for a later time.

Thanks for your help

Much appreciated - and yes there does not seem to be a lot of coupe owners around.

Sure, had one (#2J50041DN) for over 16 years, replaced every seal. The fat ones need to be carefully trimmed at the rear so they do not jam the windows.

Cheers!

Ps. For the ”B” pillars or the rear side window front vertical chrome rain the original rubber profile / extrusion is not availabe, the replacements are all closed foam cell.

I have recently bought a set of rear side glass seals from Paul’s Jag in the US, but have not yet done the work (more urgent issues to sort )
Are these the ones you show in your video?

Though a bit spendy, the free shipping makes this quite a good deal for those of us down under…

Hi Dave - yes they were the ones I was after and have now received. Barratts are less than half that price and shipping from the US is hellishly expensive when sent from a business. Free postage on a US site normally means free postage just in the US but not always.

Cheers

Hi Garry
Free was free in this case. They were posted to NZ at no cost. Advt is quite specific in this regard. Did get stung for GST, but couriered straight to my doorstep in the South Islandđź‘Ť
Also are rubber, not closed cell foam/sponge.

Just to wrap this thread up.

I have now got a complete set of rear window rubbers - not cheap but show me how the sealing system works. While I have a complete set I have decided not to use them and stay with what was fitted but better understanding how the various components work.

The OEM fit has a hard rubber at the bottom of the front of the window that forces itself through the sealing rubber as the window goes down so protecting the the main seal at the front of the rear window - a little of rubber grease helps.

The sealing rubber currently fitted is a very tight U shape and does not have any protection when it goes down, as seen in the video one corner catches and then pulls out the rest.

What I have simply done is glue 2" of the U together at the bottom of the seal so one edge cannot catch and and it is now strong enough to go up and down without damage. I will keep the spares I have bought for future use.

Looking at a lot of videos on the coupe and its design, one common thing is that the commentators highlight high noise levels from the doors and windows - well that is not my experience and I am quite impressed with the noise sealing of the windows - just a little noise from the rear vision mirrors - certainly no worse than my late model Range Rover Sport.

Thanks for all the input - much appreciated.

I am still having issues with the front rubber on the drivers rear side window. I glued it on as indicated above and it has been working fine but on the weekend it once again ripped the bottom few inches of sealing rubber when I lowered the window - after it has been fine for months.

I am now wondering if the adjustment of the rear window has it just a little too far forward so that when you hit down the bottom of the window does not move back a little before going down - causing the rear window rubber to catch on the door rubber and rip out.

So any other coupe owners know if there is a fine adjustment on the rear side window or if you have had similar issues and how you dealt with it.

Thanks
