[DaimLan] 1968 daimler v8 engine not starting

My 1968 v8 250 engine has been rebuilt and we are now trying to
fire it up, and it just will not start. The engine will turn over
on the starter motor there is fuel and a spark at all the plugs.
We have checked and rechecked the setup without success.
Bit of a mystery to a number of engineers now has this happened to
anyone else and how did it get resolved?.–

Hi,

Could you tell us what you have checked. Plug lead order? Compression? Is the fuel pump ticking? Does the choke work correctly? Hopefully a silly question but you turned the choke on?

Hi Roger, thanks for your response. The car is still being restored
so there is no interior or dashboard with the choke controls. All
operations are by hand from the engine bay. All the basics you
mentioned have been checked and rechecked, by several different
mechanics both professional and amateur. The air filters are not
fitted and breather pipes to the top of the engine. Fuel pump ticks
and fills the fuel bowl, a spark can be seen at the plug when
removed. The engine was rebuilt several years ago but was oiled
when finished and was moved by hand before trying to start. The
exhaust manifold and pipes are fitted.–

Hi Broady,

A tough one. Are the spark plugs firing at the right time? As the engine is out of the car, have you mixed up left and right sides when connecting the plug leads? I half remember 20 years ago finding the manual was a little confusing to me at the time. There are two top dead centres for every turn of the camshaft. Have you checked the rotor arm points at the cylinder’s plug which at TDC with the valves closed? Theres no point firing the plug for the one at the end of the exhaust stroke. I doubt if your professional mechanics would have made such an error but its the only thing I can think of.

You didn’t say what readings the compression tester gave for each cylinder, but even if only one fired you would hear it. I suppose you should also check another fundamental, the timing of the camshaft but you’ve looked at all the obvious things so we’re left with the much less obvious.

Is the petrol fresh? Stale petrol or even fairly fresh summer grade petrol might not start an engine in the winter.

Thats all I can think of, maybe someone else here has some other thoughts.
