[DaimLan] 66 V8 trans selector problem

Hi there, first time poster here.

My 66 with BW 35 trans will not select L. The lever moves to L, as
shown on the quadrant, but the trans changes up through the gears
as if D1 is selected. It changes properly and smoothly in all
gears, and selects P, R, N, D2 & D1 ok. There does not seem to be
any adjustment available in the cable from the column lever. Is
adjustment needed at the gearbox?

Any advice would be appreciated.–

Hi shanec and welcome,

My V8-250 uses the same gearbox, I assume the linkage is similar. There are several rods and bell cranks behind the dashboard on my car. Have you checked for wear in them? DO NOT move the selector lever whilst you are feeling behind the dash, it could be very painful. The brass knuckles have a screw to take up slack caused by wear of the ball or the knuckle. I think one end of the cable is also adjustable so if it is not the column end it must be the gearbox end. This is probably the best place to start. Make sure you do not over adjust or you will lose park. Make sure your handbrake works and is also applied in case you are under the car and deselect Park. Best to chock the wheels too, you can’t be too careful with a couple of tons of double-6 on top of you.

Good luck.

Hopefully someone with a double six will also reply later. On 14 Feb 2011, at 03:06, shanec wrote:

In reply to a message from shanec sent Sun 13 Feb 2011:

Thanks Roger, should have made it clear I have a '66 V8 - not
double 6. The linkage will be the same as your 250 - I also have
a '69 model and the linkage looks the same.

I’ll give the adjustment at the gearbox a try to start with.

Cheers–
