[DaimLan] Daimler Double Six 94: only 121 cars produced!

Hello,

A big official Volkswagen dealer located next to me sells a 1994
Daimler Double Six with 90’000km (about 60’000 miles) for a
ridiculous price. They can’t sell this car for one year and now
they want to sell it quickly.

I’m looking for a XJ40 4.0l but I’m asking me that maybe this car
could be a great opportunity, maybe more interesting than a 4.0l
(because the number of cars produced, the rarity)!? But on the
other hand running and maintenance costs will be more expensive.

I’ve seen the car and it is in a good shape. Body and interior are
almost new and all works well. The leather is really superb and the
V12 logo adds a small ‘‘touch’’. The car has the double headlights,
options like memory seats and Magnolia leather. It has also the
passenger airbag. The service book is full (last at 84’000km) and
there were only 2 owners before. The car has the MoT (expertise in
Switzerland) 1 year ago.

After 1 year by the dealer (without running!), the starter was out
and need to be changed. I have also noticed a leak near the
hydraulic suspension sump (on the right in engine bay).

I have negotiated with the dealer and they are agree to do the next
service (the 96’000km service, a very big one!!) with the same
price (including the starter). Is it a good idea to do this big
service by a Volkswagen dealer?

So what do you think about this?
Is there someone that had a similar experience?
Is there something that I could check?
What about the car after one year in a parking?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Sylvain

HI Sthevoz; I Have never owned the XJ40. However conversations

with owners, specialist and dealer service personnel it woud seem
that any selection except the XJ40 wold be a better selection, The
choice her, however may be just jumping out of the frying pan into
the skillet–for what its worth. Regards GNB–

Hi,

I am a XJ40’s 4.0l owner, and one of my best friends has a daimler double
six, powered by aj engineer.

My advice is very clear, if you are choosing between a Xj40 and a daimler
double six. The driving sense for the second one is incredible. It has a
strong kick-down whatever the speed and the road conditions you may found.
My XJ40 has a gearbox supplied with the sports mode, and this is the only
thing better then in the traditional daimler double six gearbox. But you
have to know that the gear ratio in the last one is very closed, and so
that, the sport sensations are guarantized.

My XJ40 is a ford’s way of understand the Jaguar experinece. They took the
original model, and put it like a modern car, avoiding all the traditional
problems in this car. The most common, was the self-leveling suspension. I
only want to say that my car has now a simple shock absorver suspension. The
original broken down at 45 000 miles.

Once in the highway, the two cars has a similar behaviour, but the V-12
engine is smoother than 6-line one. It is traduced in fewer vibrations and
sound into the car. Two months ago we probe how a V-12 could reach 240 km
per hour as easy as my another car (a Ford Scorpio 24V Cosworth).

Speaking about the mechanical problems, the two cars are like another
jaguars. They can stop whenever they want. You don’t know why and, of
course, your mechanical either. Only Mr. Lyons knows whta a Jaguar is
thinking about.

I hope you have a very good luck with your next Jaguar.

Best regards._________________________________________________________________

Luis,
Cheers!
I know nothing of Jag-Daimlers, being a DB-18 fan, but your article was a
work of art. Most entertaining - and informative, in a perverse way.
Congratulations.

I think the best option is a X300 Daimler double six, this will be
my next Daimler.

If you know such a car in Switserland please inform me.

The xj 40 still has the most unwanted ‘‘looks’’ of any JAG, but far
way they are hard to sell because of the unappeiling looks. A
friend of mine bought a XJ 81 (Double six) for just 3000,-- (1993
model)

So it depends a bit what you have to pay for what you get.
