Diagnosing XJS boot fuel smell

Any signs you might see that identify the source, a leak? I recently replaced two missing floor plugs and the smell was much more evident. Ok, maybe I will leave them out! The only thing I see is the top hose on the fuel pump, discoloration on the pump.
The hoses all look very good but are still 35 years old. I plan on draining the sump and replacing the pump, filter and hoses to a the pump abd filter. Shouls I remive the steel tank cover and take a look at the tank and filler return hose?
I really appreciate your input.

I just finished step ONE: read EXPERIENCE IN A BOOK pp232-250…after posting!
I WILL be pulling the tank and coating inside, repacing all hoses etc.
43k miles us good but it is still 35 year old fuel pieces.

Gates barricade hose seems to be the thing to use in these cars.

Thank you Robin. I was leaning toward the 30R09 efi hose but Gates Barricade looks like a better rating on controling vapors that go right through the wall of a new fuel hose. I never would have imagined that one. Anyway, thanks for the recommendation. 30R14 it is.

I’ve had best results with J1527 marine grade barrier hose

Cheers
