[E-Type] 205/60 R15 Tyres for the E?

My 3.07 diff is really getting on my nerves. The car’s just too slow
off the line.

Step one might just be to fit 60 profile tyres. A small improvement in
gearing and probably improved handling too.

Later on maybe that elusive 3.31 diff at a price I’m prepared to pay!

Any Listers using 60 profile tyres on the street? Comments
please…

Thanks.

…can you say “drag bottom”?
I knew you could.

Clive, Does your '65 gearbox have the 2.68 : 1 1st gear ratio or the later
2.93 :1 ratio. I recall Dan and Tony having a discussuion some time back
that the first gear ratio times the rear drive ratio must equal 9 to be
satisfactory. The later first gear ratio does that, the earlier one does not.
FWIW your solution may be a change in gear box ratios rather than
differential ratios. Maybe Dan.Tony, Tom or Terry can best answer this
question.

Thanks for your comments John.

My gearbox has the 2.68 first gear, so the 2.93 first-gear box, as
fitted
to the Series 2’s, is also a possibility. However, I think I’d prefer
the closer ratio between third and top gears in the Series 1 gearbox…

The Series 2 ratio drop from third to top is 28% whereas the Series 1,
which I now have, is only 21%. (By way of a further comparison the JT5
ratio changes 25% from third to top.)

Thanks Lloyd,

I once hit a dip at speed and bottomed the tailpipes with the standard
tyres, so this is certainly a consideration.

I think I’ll try to get some good second hand tyres first and give the
idea a try.
