[E-Type] 205/60 R15 Tyres /G/Box's

Hi Listers,

The 205/6015" Tyres are getting a few Miles.

The best all round Tyre I have found for the “E” Type is the said size, I
race with 205/60 15", although I have tried Hoosier 225/55 15" on 7" Rims I
don’t like them the old 205/60/15" Dunlop R’s on 6" Rims give faster times
and a better feel to the car, unfortunately the Dunlops are finished.

I like the 205/65/15" for Road use, the extra bag in the wall gives a nicer
ride, also they are cheap and plentiful, some of the Asian Brands are sticky
too.

Clive had some concern about his Jag not having enough Grunt with his
existing G/Box & High 2.85-1 ? Diff Ratio, well it would probably be blown
off by a Hyundai atleast until 60 MPH.

The 2+2 is a heavy car, to change the 2.85-1 Diff is not the only way out,
change the G/Box, that is use the all Synchro Box Ratio’s from another
Jaguar, a 240 MK 2, has a much lower 1st gear, memory tells me about 3.2-1
much better then the about 2.65-1.2.75-1.
The lower 240 Ratio’s gives more brisk acceleration and the 2.85-1 still
Cruises in Top Gear who needs a 5th Gear ?.

The Moss Box Ratio’s give better acceleration then the All Synchro’s,that is
why some people thought the 3.8 Engine was a better performer.

A good combination for the E Type with the Moss Box, is to use the O Series
Ratio’s from the MK1 or the late MK 2’s, you get a lower 1st,2nd,3rd when
used with a 3.07-1 diff it is as fast as a similar Car with a C/R All
Synchro Box with say a 3.3-1 Diff.

I like the O Series Box mainly because of its lower 3rd Gear, suits the XK
Engine at most Circuits gets the car into Top Quicker and also the lower
second gives a lesser Car more Grunt out of the Slower turns, then when into
3rd you have it over the Noisy Silly ? , C/Ratio Needham Type Box’s, you
need a lot more HP & Torque to pull the car using the C/R Box’s, C/R Box’s
generally do not suit the MK 2 & E Types, of course there will always be a
circuit that would suit the C/R Box, generally most don’t try the Said O
Series they go straight out and fir the C/R thinking its better.
Our old Grey Mark 2 Racer has been updated by its current owner, more power
he says, and a C/R Box, the car goes the same speed with supposedly 60 HP
more.
The original Spec Grey Mark 2 Racer is the Fastest MK 2 around Amaroo Park
why ? because it was geared properly, Lionel Walkers the most powerful MK
Racer, with its C/R Box was bogging down when the Grey Mark 2 was on song,
Lionels car was faster and more powerful on a longer Track without the Hill
& Near Stop Right Hander.

Some might recall how we took out the 4.2 Engine in the Jagpro Racer and
fitted a lesser 3.8 ? Well we did and at the same time we fitted a Moss Box,
left the Diff alone, the car managed to go slightly faster then with the
4.2, because the lower ratio’s of the Moss Box got the car off the line
faster and kept the Engine on Song, the lower gears gave it more Grunt where
we needed it, if we fitted the 4.2 Engine we would be Faster Still.
You can see the Grey Mark 2, plus a Shot of the E Type Racer 100 years
ago, then Sponsored by Leyland & JDC,seems like yesterday.

The MkII pictures are really impressive, especially the one with her
right forepaw in the air…

Yeah that’s a lovely old car it was Vicky’ Car, I pinched it from her and
made a Racer of it , one of Australia’s most successful all round Mark 2’s
the present owner Robert Loesch is a good Peddler, the car is now looked
after by Graeme Lord of Fairy Meadow N.S.W he has the car Shiny under the
Hood and it goes great.

Rob is entered in the Targa Tasmania again, hope he has the same success as
last time re ran, Class Win & Targa Plate
