[E-Type] 4 inch concrete and two post lifts

I just posted some pix of a two post lift I installed in my garage
last year. A long time friend has been in the business for 25
years, and sells comercial and residential units. This one is
diferent in that it has an h type foot print that distibutes the
load over a larger area. This one was used, (he sells a lot of
them) but it was a comercial unit and is very stout. It is also
special in that it is only 11 feet wide. I some times have to push
larger vehicals the last couple feet into position, because the
doors will hit the posts. It is a small price to pay for the extra
space. My friend tells me that two post lifts are no problem on
four inch concrete if you buy the right lift. There are similar
models to the one like mine on the market, but he warns people to
stay away from the cheap ones because some can be dangerous.–

How important is it to have the floor very flat and level under the
pads?
What brand was he recommending?

Hi bill, most garage floors are poured on an angle for drainage. I
had to shim the base of mine to make it level. It’s very important
to get your post plum, because the higher you go the more leverage
will be forced on the anker bolts. acording to my friend, it is not
the weight or down force. It’s when you have the weight off center
and pull the hold downs out of the floor. He sells a lot of rotary
brand lifts for residential.–

My concern would be: 1) If local codes, and most do, required a 6’’
slab for a two post lift, and 2) If the manufacturer, and most do,
specify a 6’’ slab for their two post lift. You might have a problem
or liability if an accident (God forbid) occurred. I’ve seen slabs
and foundations crack for all sorts of reasons. It would be a shame
if a crack formed from added stress and shifting soil conditions
right around the base of your lift resulting in an unexpected tilt,
slip, and crash of your treasured E-type. I can just hear the
insurance adjuster; ‘‘We’re awfully sorry about your car, but the
hoist wasn’t installed up to code. Maybe you should contact the
installer, they should carry a liability policy’’. Oops, I don’t
think my friend carries a liability policy. Stick to the code and
CYA, it’s cheap insurance and peace of mind in the long run.
