[E-Type] AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!

And other appropriate words!
I had posted a note a few days ago regarding the non-performance of the
Bendix on my starter - I finally pulled the starter and found the Bendix had
come off! Apparently the cotter pin had broken (or never been installed)
and the nut came off along with all the other goodies. Thank goodness the
engine did NOT start! So now I have to pull the engine and transmission to
get all the bits out of the clutch. I had not planned to do that until next
year … oh, well.
Now to the point - I will need a rebuild kit for a gearbox - first gear
unsynchronized, all original. Besides the synchronizer balk rings and
gaskets, what else will I need? I will assume bearings are OK, until I
take it apart. I will call all my usual sources; any experience with
good/bad parts sources for transmission goodies? Reply off-list to
@Paul_Wilson1 with ideas, sources, etc. Thanks, and say a
prayer for patience!
My son says that is the price I pay for having a 37 year old car. My
revenge is that some day it will be HIS, and it will be older!

I would definitely replace the bearings, whether they seem OK or not…it
can’t be more than $100 or $150 to replace all of them, and that’s peanuts
in the whole process.-----Original Message-----

Paul,

At the risk of sounding silly, couldn’t you get down there with a flexible
wand with a magnet on the end? Failing that, how about drilling a hole in
the bellhousing large enough for parts to pass through. I have a hole in my
bell housing large enough to pass a socket to remove the clutch. Then you
could take it out next year.

Just a thought,

General rule of thumb today when working on a Jaguar - replace whatever you
can reach and afford; the labor (and inconvenience) usually exceeds the
hardware cost, so double-up activities, if you can!

Thanks, it seems I will be able to put it off 'til next year after all
… by fishing around with a magnet and fingers through the drain holes in
the bottom of the bell housing, I was able to fish all the pieces out,
including pieces of the armature threads! It seems all I will have to do is
get a starter, after all. I’m a happy camper, or at least not so
desperately unhappy as a few days ago!
When I do rebuild the transmission it will be all the way; I don’t want
to do that again soon.
