[E-Type] Advice on removing intake manifold without damage

I started tear down of the car for a full Resto
today had a good day of production even with
Rusty bolts I have a lift and I’m planning on
dropping the motor out the bottom exhaust is
out and all the bolts are removed from the
intake manifold but she seems to be on there
pretty tight and I don’t want to damage it
getting it off. I soaked it with PB Blaster
and I’m going to look at it in the morning but
if anybody has any advice for tomorrow trying
to get the engine out tomorrow. I’m going to
try and add a few photos of progress to my
photo album wish me luck and I appreciate help
as always–

Series of sharp (as in sharply tapered) wedges, moving around the
manifold and tapping gently will move it. Don’t try to loosen any one
place too much until the manifold and gasket separate, which they
will.

Gently does it and be patient…it will come off.On Sun, Aug 7, 2016 at 2:23 AM, Bob 2crazy4u acloserlook_tuc@msn.com wrote:

Just to be sure I am picturing this correctly - you have
removed the 18 (I think there are 18) nuts & lock washers
that secure the innermost section of the manifold to the
studs on the head?

Perhaps someone has used an aggressive sealant on both
sides of the gasket as the original metal gasket would seem
unlikely to resist this much.

The other sticking point could be corrosion on the studs so
you will want to assure they are getting soaked with the
PBlaster as well as the joint of the two assemblies.–

Yes I have removed the carbs and all nuts attaching the
manifold to the block. The exhaust came off easily. I
cleared any evidence of corrosion around the studs and Pb blaster soaked around the gasket and each stud hoping this will loosen it. I will upload photo. Noted one two studs came out and front one is off but not removed because of clearances

Morning Bob,
This is the point where I would triple check to make sure ALL
the nuts were off, take pictures of the areas that you can’t
see readily from underneath. More than once I’ve had something
similar happen only to find that I had missed one. As the
others have suggested keep soaking it and gently working it, I
might use a rubber mallet to tap on it up, down and sideways
gently and just keep working at it. It will come off so hang
in there.
Cheers,
LLynn–

This is one of the things for which those USB cameras are perfect
for. It only takes a minute to plug it in and have a look.

Some time ago I discovered the best penetrating oil I have
ever used and it’s cheap. Half acetone and half ATF. Shake
it - it becomes pink. If it doesn’t loosen a bolt, you’re
doomed for the heat wrench.

Wedges: If you KNOW that all of the nuts are off, start
carefully with a putty knife and a light hammer at the
joint, then work your way to larger wedges. Sometimes I’ve
had to start with a razor blade.

Hope this helps.

Afternoon,
I haven’t bought penetrating oil in years, like Glenn I mix up
a batch of ATF/acetone and use it in one of my oil cans. Seems
to work very well, only down side is that the acetone does
evaporate off and has to be replenished occasionally.
Cheers,

Just hit it with a rubber mallet until the gasket gives way.

There’s nothing you can do too much harm to.–
