I found the Summit unit and it is the un milled version. It will
work but space and belts will be an issue. Note the 4 drilled
tangs for the clutch coil—the E type unit is again un drilled
and milled down.–

Those are two piston units, with the inlet and outlet at the top of
the cylinder head. The most popular application was Mercedes, until
about 1980. They’re physically larger, and the hose connections won’t
clear the bonnet.

The factory unit is an HG500. Tecumseh also makes an
HG850-1000, which I think is a physically larger unit.
That may be what you are thinking of.

Thanks George, I see what you are referring to.

The milled surface you rare referring to is the side face
of the compressor that bolts to the mounting plate that
bolts to the combination alternator/compressor bracket,
correct? There is a difference of approximately 1/8’', the
original unit being milled down that amount. The unit fits
(at least in my installation, which is stock) with no
issues.

My clutch unit fit without issues and I used the same fan
belt, alignment and adjustment are good.–

Correct John but if you look carefully you will see both sides
have been milled and the clutch bosses or tangs have not been
drilled for a clutch–they are unique to the E type but you can
mill a regular one during a rebuild.–

I am installing my air conditioner on my 1970 E type coupe. The pictures posted by Joel have been very helpful. I have a few questions…

  1. bracket on passengeer side. Is this the two L shaped brakets that bolt together with the slotted hole to make it adjustable?
  2. Besides the front clips and the above bracket are there any more brackets to attach the evaporator to the underside of the dash?
  3. When I opened the evaporator unit, the expansion valve area has been covered with a foam product, something similar to the expansion foam in a can from Home Depot. Is this foam original or did a PO add this material?
  4. I’m undecided on replacing the compressor with the Sanden unit. Currently thinking I will try the original Techuseh unit. It has suction and the clutch operates. Is there any way to check for shaft for leakage before installation?
  5. If I use the Sanden unit, does it come with the proper pulley to match my car pulleys? also does it come with the valves to match the 45 degree flare hose fittings.
I plan on replacing the hoses and the dryer.

Russ;
Thanks for asking.

  1. Yes, but I did change the original bracket. I used a piece of angle iron about an inch wide and drilled two holes, one to attach it to the evaporator case and one to fasten it to the right side foot well area.
  2. No. The ‘front clips’ just slip over the lower dash edge, there is not a ‘attaching screw’ as such.
  3. From my experience I would suggest the foam was a ‘added’ item. My case had what some call ‘dum dum’. 3M makes a product, black, and it works fine. It is a sticky caulk.
4.I don’t know really. I bought a rebuilt compressor from George Camp and once I installed it and had the car running (maybe a year or two later) I took it to a shop and had them check for leaks and charge it. No dice as they found it leaked from the shaft seal. I talked to George and he suggested a couple of solutions one of which was to install a new seal kit which I did. No more leaks and they were able to charge the compressor.
  4. It is my understanding that you can order the Sanden compressor with a ‘V belt’ pulley or a flat belt pulley. Also the choice of fittings can be specified.
    Hope this helps.

Regards, Joel.

Thanks Joel for getting back with answers so quickly. I’ve been standing on my head under the dash most of the morning, putting wires back where they belong and adding some sound deadening and insulation to the underside of the dash.
Looks like I have all of the hardware to attach the unit.
I think my evaporator also has some of the “dum-dum” you mentioned.

Thanks
Russ

Thanks for the suggestion, guys! they’ll be helpful when my aircon is finally arrived.
