[E-Type] AOL - Plain Text

Only AOL commercial I remember… Thought it was cute because I’ve felt
the same way about the landfill fodder, sorry, unsolicited software disks.

Great related story: Click and Clack of Car Talk fame had some thousands of
lids for yogurt containers printed with their and NPR’s logo on them for
some type of promotion. The lawyers stepped in before they could be used
and decided there was a conflict and they could not go through with the
promotion. Click and Clack proceeded to have listeners come up with a use
for the lids. Winning idea was to send them to AOL - who better to
appreciate thousands of useless round things?

It’s pronounced “A O HELL”

Haven’t used it in 11 years.

There is a syndicated columnist in my local paper who’s format is a Q &
A about pc problems. If not every week its virtually every week that he
has to bail someone out of an AOL injected problem. His conclusion is
that their software is terrible and simply is not compatible with some
hardware, it will never work in all environments and perhaps not well in
most.

A couple of years ago I installed an AOL disc, for the life of me I
can’t remember why, but it was the most annoying software I have ever
encountered, it took me for ever to get it off my computer and finally
had to remove windows and reinstall the OS. Never again!

And virtually all other ISPs cost less!

…Anyway, this is not meant to be bashing AOL. They provide a service
and many folks like their service. I just prefer to use a regular ISP
who allows me to use conventional standards compliant software to browse
and e-mail…

A lot of folks tout that as a benefit but many other ISP’s have web access

George,

I own a manufacturing company in Sarasota that does almost 80% of it’s
business overseas and I totally agree with Mike.
I have to travel to foreign countries several times each year and have seen
the problems that other ISP’s provide. There is NO possibility of a connection
from China, Russia, India or Brazil, especially if your ISP is a local
telephone or cable TV company.
AOL can be a pain in some respects but, while you may think that AOL is
dictating email standards to the rest of the world, in the long run it provides us
today with all the amenities that we expect and pioneers the standards that
most, if not all, will follow in the future.

With Respect,
