Hi! Listers,
I’m having to take a break from the list for a time, work load has me at

So from Saturday I’m off.

Sorry for being so absent the past few weeks…

I did get out for a rally this past weekend with my son Christopher,
so enjoy some pictures:

I’ll try and write up a short summary for the list soon.

Check out the new radio antenna I put on the E-type:

Should improve reception dramatically! =)

I have two+ weeks of list mail to catch up on, but I’ll try not to
reply to anything lest I revive any long-dead threads. =)–

Just don’t accept rides from Chuck in stormy weather…could give
a whole new meaning to the term ‘heated seats’.–

Chuck,
Hey, and if the car “fails to proceed” you can put up a sail

Chuck,
Hey, and if the car “fails to proceed” you can put up a sail

heh… unfortunately the keel required to balance that out would
probably make travel over solid ground quite “impossible to
proceed”… =)

The only thing that was never restored post-flood full-immersion on
that car was the radio (it just has a strip of black tape covering
the hole in the dash) so it only makes this issue even that much more
absurd.

Touching on another subject here on the list, I noticed some little
pools of oil around the last two spark plugs when I checked under the
hood/bonnet this weekend, so I suspect my gasket job on my intake
valve cover/tach gen replacement earlier this summer was not as tight
as I originally assumed. I guess I’ll have a project to keep me busy
in the barn come springtime. As for now, the cat is going under wraps
for the winter, as the rains have returned. Thankfully winter waited
until this little rally was over.

My son Christopher turns out to be quite a good navigator. We made
little or no effort to do the full TSD speed calculations as I know
my speedometer is quite inaccurate and now suspect my “new” tach
reads a little high as well. The odometer is “close enough” so we
just focused on staying on course and as close to the posted speed
limit as possible (I did do a quick calibration against my wife’s
relatively new Volkswagen the weekend before… her driving ahead
with cruise control and me following at a set distance… and
checking her fixed speed by telephone against my wildly optimistic
speedo.)

Anyway, Chris managed to keep us on course (mostly) even when his
bonehead driver cast doubt upon him. He managed to refrain from
correcting his driver with clipboard whacks - and if any penalties
were accrued (on the second day) they were all due to driver
error… Most likely driving a bit too fast.

We arrived late for the rally start on Saturday (combination of
driver error and Washington State Ferry issues) so we never had a
chance to check our clock against the rallymaster’s prior to
starting… only to discover we were 4 minutes and 4 seconds off the
next morning! We could have been coming close to zero every segment
and in reality getting nearly the full penalty (5 minutes was the Max
penalty) on every segment for all we knew!

Sure enough we finished 11th on the first day.

The second day, with our correctly calibrated time calculations in
hand, we probably did much better. Unfortunately the rallymaster’s
computer crashed (Damn you Bill Gates!) and we’ll have to live with
the mystery of how well or poorly we did for a few more days. Chris’
navigation skills only improved the second day and we managed to stay
on course the entire time (except when I managed to overshoot one
turn by a few yards and the E-types brakes got a quick workout.

Despite the chilly weather, we left the top down both days, and even
saw the sun a few times. There was supposed to be another E-type
there (a SIII) but it’s owner brought his V-12 sedan up from Portland
instead. (I found out later the man has FIVE Jaguars… he is
obviously insane! =)

It seemed most people feared the weather and left their classic cars
at home, so the rally was made up of mostly modern BMW’s. Two other
cars, a New Beetle Convertible who ran the rally on Saturday, and a
couple who ventured down from Vancouver in an MG B for Sunday’s
event, had the spirit to run the course top-down… As for the
others… What a bunch of lightweights! =)

The highlight of the weekend was a 30 minute stop at Glenn Mounger’s
house on Saturday to visit his fine collection, which includes a
stunning Dusenberg, a racing Packard (prepped for, but never ran at,
Le Mans), and a 250gt Ferrari. I would say it was a stroke of evil
genius on the part of the rallymaster to schedule this stop, as I bet
everybody was late leaving there… I know we were as I lingered
for quite some time and could have easily spent the rest of the day
admiring the gorgeous cars! The ultimate however was having this man,
who has been a long-time judge and organizer of the Pebble Beach
Concourse say, with big smile, “Wow, what a pretty car!” to me as we
left his driveway. =)

We had a blast, and it was certainly a nice way to wrap up “the season.”–

Chuck: Shouldn’t you have a green and white Jaguar flag up there? Under no
circumstances should you drive with the flag mounted on the radio antenna.
The resultant wind drag may not bend your rather substantial mast but it
will certainly bend the sheetmetal.

The flag on top of the antenna is prety neat. i hope it doesn’t make
too much drag at highway speed.
