[E-Type] Battery connectors

Greetings,

Do anyone know of a good technique for soldering the
terminals on braided battery cables? I have 37 strand
braided cable onto which I need to solder a Lucas helmet
type connector and 3 terminal connectors for the starter and
solenoid. How do I heat them enough to make a good
connection without burning the insulation? Any tips would be
appreciated. Thanks!

Cheers,

Shell,
Having spent 10 years working on electric and hybrid vehicles,
I know all about soldering battery cables! The only way I know to
do it without ruining the insulation is to use a solder pot - a
small heated bowl full of bolten solder. You then simply flux the
cable end, dip it into the pot for 10-15 seconds, and it comes out
nice and solder-coated. You also flux, heat and tin the connector,
and take the cable directly from the solder pot and jam it into the
heated connector, while the solder in both is still molten. The
connector you can just heat (carefully!) with a propane torch. Be
careful to get it just hot enough to melt the solder, without
melting the lead connector. You can improvise a solder pot with a
suitable small, heavy pan and a propane torch. I would think a
plumbing supply house would probably have small solder pots as
well, since they are commonly used for sealing joints in cast-iron
sewer pipe. In a pinch, you can protect the insulation to some
extent by wrapping it with a wet cloth while you heat the wire.–
