[E-Type] Beware that quote

Over a two month period I asked a well known west coast ‘usuals’'for
a quote for a generator rebuild…I was told $175 or 220 depending
on who I talked with…when I send the unit in for rebuild and got
it back…with billing…the charge was over double the quoted
amounts…I of course did not recall who I talked with and when I
called to question this charge I was not given any consideration
for the difference…after spending untold thousands with them over
the last 20 yrs…from now on I use someone else… if you add in
the $300 core charge they got over $700 for the rebuild! shame on
them–

Pete, That indeed is a most un-nerving experience. By
sharing your experience with us all, it is easy to see that
your troubles might have been avoided had you been given a
written quote…at least that would have allowed a better
decision to influence whether you would do business with
them or not. I also wonder why a customer who has spent real
bucks with them, are treated as a complete stranger.I guess
this could be somewhat mitigated by dealing with the same
sales person each time you phone in.–

Pete,

I totally feel for you. I think rebuilding of the
generators and starters are one of the most frustrating
topics on these boards. If I had a nickel for every poster
here who blithely (and incorrectly) claims that you can take
it down and get it rebuilt by your local electrical shop,
I’ld have finished my 61 restoration by now. The truth is,
if you go down to your local shop, unless you’re really
lucky, what you encounter is someone who says it is too old
to work on and they don’t have the parts unless the
‘‘rebuild’’ is limited to replacing brushes.

The result is that you are stuck sending the part out to be
rebuilt, and you get stuck with the vagaries associated with
sending parts out. Will you get your concours correct part
back, or some less valuable replacement? Will they stick to
the price quote? Will they go out of business, having your
part disappear into the ethos? Will they deny receiving it,
or claim it was sent back, like what happened to Paul
Wigton? It really sucks. Sorry to hear you were victimized
by this.–

Hummmmm–There is an well known auto-electric shop here in the Pittsburgh area that has rebuilt at least 4 Lucus alternators/generators for me and did an exceptionally good job at very reasonable prices. So–my guess is that in any reasonably larger city/area you will certainly be able to find these specialty shops that can do it for you without sending it out at these high prices.

Just my 2C’s.

I have bought several rebuilt gens and starters from XK’s
for around $200 (within the last few years). I used the box
they came in to send back my core, The quality was
excellent.
They always looked brand new, inside and out.–

Pete, sorry to hear of your debacle. The common thread though
among respondents seems to be the multiplicity of times that the
Lucas was in for repair, upgrade, new diodes etc.

I travelled that road 15 years ago and once the total of combined
Lucas alternator fix-its was going north of $1000, I decided to end
my Lucas relationship.

My Ser 2 FHC now has a 65 amp Hitachi one wire setup. The unit
came from an 85 Nissan Pickup truck from NAPA for $60.

Easy installation, lines up perfectly with bolt holes and drive
pulley, and it does not look like the Kenworth-sized Delco, this
one is scaled closer to the Lucas.

Ludites will recoil in horror at the thought, however reliablilty,
price and flawless performance for the last 10 years convinced me
that it was the right decision.

If your rebuilder starts planning his Greek vacation when you show
up with your Lucas, you know where he is getting the money from.

pics available if interested, contact me… sorry have no joy
posting pics on the forum.

best regards, Brian.–
