[E-Type] Can my engine be installed with console already installed?

I have 3 major tasks left in the restoration of my 63 series I: 1)
Rebuild/install IRS, 2) Install new interior & 3) rebuild/install
the engine. Everything else (less the chrome) is essentially done.

I plan to have the IRS finished and installed by mid-January. This
leaves me with a rolling car without the engine and interior.

Now, my plan for the engine installation is to use my four post
storage lift and lower the car down to the engine/trans which I
will have blocked up a foot or so underneath the car. I believe I
will not have any problems doing this. I just need to not have the
engine mount brackets installed on the block (or the intake/exhaust
connected either).

I was wondering, with this method of engine installation, can I
fully install the interior and just be carefull lining the shifter
up with the shift boot, or maybe just leave the console out until
the engine is installed ?

Advice/comments please.

It will work fine, that’s what Wiggles suggested when I did
essentially the same thing last year. Hardest part was
pushing the trans up high enough to get the mounting bolts
installed.

…and have you thermally insulated the bejezzus out of the
tunnel? Not sure what’s best to use but anything is better
than nothing.

Chris, As you already have the console removed for the interior refurbishment, I
would leave it off until the engine is installed.

If it were me, I would leave the center console and tunnel
gearbox cover out until after the gearbox is fitted. It is
fairly simple to install the console over the gear shift
lever, and then you don’t have to worry about messing with the
cover and shift boot as you are guiding the engine/gearbox
combo into place–

Just make sure to have a helper guide the shifter up through the
boot(s): Otherwisde, you can spear them.

Don’t ask…;)–

Chris as said if the console is out–leave it out until. If you do
it the other way do not forget your reverse light leads on the
trans and the heat foam on top of the trans–both easier from the
top once all is in. That said I never remove the seats or console
when removing an engine–but those cars are not under restoration
either.–

Not only did everybody basically agree, they all agreed very
quickly!

I’ll probably dynamat the trans tunnel and fit everthing, carpet
and console. Then take at least the console out. The transmission
cover (mine is the molded plastic one), I will decide what do with
when I get a better look at the reverse light switch wiring.

Thanks for the replies everyone. -Chris–

You go ahead and do your dynamat but if you do not put the foam
filler you will regret it. It stops hot air!–

If your tunnel is newly painted, try the
dynamat/coolmat/whatever INSIDE the tunnel. Much better
results I would think!
