[E-Type] Carb oil

When I checked the oil level in my carbs today (67 2+2, 4.2L) I
noticed that the oil had turned a thick yellowish color. Has
anyone seen this before?–

Most likely they got water mixed in with the oil somehow. When oil
and water are chruned together, it turns thick yellow and will not
separate out.–

What kind of oil do you use for the carb dampers? The manual calls
for 20w oil. I have found 20w-50 at a motorcycle shop. Will that
work? I have heard that sewing machine oil works well, but I am
not sure about its qualities. Thanks.–

20 weight oil is good. 20-50, in lower temps, might be a bit too
stiff, and cause a bit of an overrich condition at throttle tip-in.–

3-in-1 makes an SAE 20 oil in their characteristic small tins
that’s just right. it’s called ‘‘electric motor oil’’ and is on the
shelf at my local hardware store right next to the regular 3-in-1
oil.

Some people use ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) because it’s
easy to get and about the right weight. Sewing machine oil is
quite a bit lighter than 3-in-1, and would probably be way too thin.

Quality of the oil doesn’t matter other than viscosity and being
non-corrosive, there’s not really much lubrication going on,
certainly nothing stressed or high temp. Its purpose is to damp
the rise of the carb piston during acceleration, which enrichens
the mixture an appropriate amount. Theoretically the thicker the
oil the richer the acceleration mixture. No effect on steady-state
running.

My experience is that on the street differences in various weights
damper oil is not perceptible with a well-tuned engine.

Doesn’t keep some people from obsessing over it, though. No
worries.
