[E-Type] Data Plate Stamping?

Ray,
I just inquired at XK’s Unlimited (service dept) and they say they have the
right stamps.
I would send the original and ask them if their stamps match.

Anyone out there have reasonably correct stamping dies for the SI
data plate, that would be willing to stamp mine for me? My
original one is kinda mangey, and I’ve had a new one floating
around forever, but no dies to stamp it with. Also, California
cars, at least some, like mine, had an additional little tag
mounted next to the ‘‘Made in England’’ tag, which was stamped ‘‘J/XX’’
with XX being the year of first registration. Anyone know where to
get those from, or should I just make one?

Ray,

You might try Todd Clarke of Clarke Spares & Restorations in Doylestown PA.
He has the correct dies and does tag stamping for all the old BMC marques.
The only contact info I have is telephone 215-348-0595 and fax 215-348-4160.

Ray,
I just called XK’s Unlimited about this. The service dept. says they have
the right stamps–I would send them the original to see if they can match
the numbers and letters.

Ray,

I know you are on here all the time. Have you ever met with/chatted with
Dave Ferguson over at Images Auto Body? They’ve done over 3 national champs
and we are lucky to have them here in Campbell, CA. They can hook you up.
All the stuff is premade and they have all the stamps. Cheers - john-----Original Message-----

I would be reluctant to send them the original. Not that I don’t trust XKs, but things do get lost or damaged in the mail or delivery service. You might try to see if a photocopy would show the numbers. If so I would send them the photocopy and ask them to duplicate the plate.

Something else on data plates. On my original plate ( 1969 vintage), all the areas that are silver are raised in relation to the areas that are black. It seems like the plate was ran through a set of rollers that “embossed” the plate, it was then painted black and the black was then skimmed off of the raised portions. All the replacements I found are perfectly flat with the black silk screened on. They are not nearly as durable as the originals, imho.

John,
Thanks. I’m all too familiar with Images. But that’s another

Ray, I borrowed LLoyd’s stamps for my '69 OTS data plate. There are very
slight differences between the font on original plate (I have it on my
office wall in front of me) and his.
A couple of notes:

  1. You need a very firm and flat surface beneath the data plate while
you stamp it. I used a $5 stainless steel board scraper implement from
    the kitchen.
  2. Tape the data plate down to the aforementioned surface. Tape that to
something very stable, like a solid workbench. Following the above steps
resulted in a data plate that is very flat - not all mangled and
    distorted.

Fwiw, the original data plate on my '69 OTS (1R9649) is very much like
the replacement - flat metal with the black areas silk-screened on.

I don’t have the answer to your other question - my '69 California car
(Stevens Creek Blvd.) never had one. You could probably get a trophy
shop to emboss the raised characters if you could fashion the little
tag.

Cheers,
David
