[E-Type] Does anybody have a 4.2l bellhousing out of the car, pls?

I have a 78 XJ6 with a custom conversion to manual T5
gearbox. Basically it used a modified 4.2l XJ6 automatic
bell housing, an E-Type 4.2l manual flywheel and a 1970s
Mustang clutch.

I have chewed the flywheel ring gear and it has been
suggested to me that the mismatch of the E-type manual
flywheel and the XJ6 auto bell housing could be part of the
problem as the starter may be in slightly different
positions on the XJ6 auto bell and the E-Type manual bell.

I am trying to check this and wondered is anybody has the
bell housing out of the car and could place it on a large
piece of paper and trace the outline of the surface that
attaches to the engine and the bolt holes for the starter
and post it to me, please? I’d reimburse any costs.

Thanks

David,

I think I can help you here. All is out of my car as clutch
replacement and mini restore is under way.

Do I understand correctly, you need the outline of the 4.2L
manual transmission bell housing with the starter holes
notated? Do you need other dimensions?

Would be glad to help.–

I did a similar 5 sp conversion using the alum bellhousing
from the Borg-Warner model 12. I recall there was a
difference in the number of teeth on the Jag steel
Flywheels. Been a while can’t recall which ones. Compare
the number of teeth on your old flex plate. Dave 77 V12Xj-S–

I know that a 4.2 bell housing and a 3.8 flywheel are
incompatible and vice versa, as far as the starter is
concerned. If you are using a 4.2 bell housing then you need
to use a 4.2 flywheel and a 4.2 starter. The same is true
for the 3.8. How this relates to your situation with the
XJ6, I don’t know. :-)–

Thanks. Yes, that’s exactly what I need but somebody
already offered and is taking care of it for me. I
appreciate the offer.

Yes, you are right. The E-type 3.8 used a flywheel with 104
teeth an the the 4.2 used one with 133. One needs to use
the matching starter, flywheel and bell housing to get
things to work.

My challenge is complicated by use of the XJ6 4.2 automatic
bell housing. Help from others has established the diameter
of the E-Type 4.2 flywheel and the XJ6 4.2 automatic
flexplate are the same but the XJ6 flexplate has 134 teeth
instead of 134. The starters for the E-type 4.2 and the
XJ6 4.2 automatic are the same part number. I am trying to
check that the the bell housings locate the starter in the
same position relative to the flywheel. If it does, then I
think I will ignore the 1 tooth difference and buy a used
E-Type 4.2 flywheel to replace the one that has chewed up
ring gear.
