[E-Type] First E-Type tune up questions #2

The forum was so helpful yesterday that I thought I’d try
round 2. This morning’s dizzy cleanup and point gap setting
went well but now on to timing on my ‘68 fhc. I see the
timing pointer fine but shouldn’t there be some sort of
correspoding marks, notches or groves on the crank damper?
I cleaned the damper as best I could and all I see are two
round 1/2’’ dimples. Do I extend a line outward from those
to the edge of the damper for timing purposes? I was going
to try that but the battery needed a good charge before I
went any further-both the car’s & mine.–

Craig,
There should be degree marks on the damper, out to at least
10BTDC, but they are very shallow, and if the damper has been
painted, can be very hard to see. I file a small notch in the rim
of my damper and use a digital delay timing light, so the TDC mark
is the only one I need. Equus makes a very nice one, widely
available for about $100.–

Craig
Go to TDC, take a rag with some solvent and clean the damper of
grease (engine off of course). Take some chalk and rub it into the
timing marks/numbers. Makes it easier to see with a timing light.
