[E-Type] front crank teflon seal

In reply to a message from 64etype sent Wed 15 Apr 2015:

For the record, I just finished installing the timing cover
and oil pan with the Teflon seal on my '64 3.8. As
discussed previously in the archives, there is no way on
earth that seal will fit correctly on a 3.8 timing cover
without trimming back the outer radius. I used 120 grit
sand paper followed by 220. Also helps to shape the
rubber at the outer edges to mimic the old lip seal
profile. Glen Jarboe and others covered this nicely back
in the day, but I thought I’d ditto their experience. Yes,
the rubber around the radius is made to compress, but not
that much. Trial and error…multiple fittings. Final
installation was with a very small amount of sealant around
the radius in case my shrink job was irregular. But even
with the modifications it’s still squashed in there. This
would be a very daunting job with the engine still in the
car.

I used a metric oil ring in the spacer groove as suggested
above…requires that the sharp lip at the end of the crank
be rounded off very slightly with a file to get it
started. Nice snug fit when installed.

Permatex 85420, Gasket Dressing and Sealant, is their blue
Hylomar equivalent, and it’s the cat’s meow for installing
the timing cover and oil pan gaskets.

So, the engine has a front Teflon seal, a Terry’s rear seal
conversion, and is stuck together with the best glue I
could find. Surely it won’t leak…–
