[E-Type] heat shields

Someone asked about heat shields.
My S S sxhaust has asbestos heat shield between the mufflers and
floor. Came withh the kit. Very effective. It can be a build-it-yerself
thing, piece of sheet metal, insulation and 4 spacers/4 screws.

Stuart,

Neither did I, till I discovered that apparently lots
of brake pads (e.g.) still contain asbestos.
(Honda Civic service manual) SO, it must be all over…

Dear gals & guys… I would have thought that the trial lawyers and
the EPA would have put Asbestos on the endangered species list…What
companies, if anyone knows, have survived the asbestos class action law
suits, if any in fact has…I think Johns Manville went ingloriously down
the tubes didn’t it??? . or do we import our “asbestos” from Iraq???
or China???
Will wonders never cease???

Hmmmm, LOOKS like asbestos. Maybe it’s cardboard?

I believe some of the new heat shield materials are actually a cement
based product similar to the Hardi-Backer board you find at the home
improvement stores for tile and fireplace use.

I used some to replace the asbestos heat shield near the headers and you
would swear it was asbestos to look at it. About $10 for a 3 by 5 foot
sheet at places like Home Depot.

George,

What glue did you use for this material?

Thanks,

Will

The stuff is rigid like a thin sheet of concrete. For my heat shields,
the originals were held in place by those split rivets through holes.
That how I put them back.

Can anyone describe for me how the front heat shield for the
exhaust system is positioned and attached in a Series 2 E-type? I
know that it’s attached to the left lower rail but it seems to
overlap the mud shields for the torsion bar which doesn’t make much
sense. I can’t find a diagram or description in any of my books and
I’m increasingly frustrated with something that should be simple.

I can’t speak to your S2 car but I do have a pic of the shields in a
'67. It does overlap the mud shields. If you’d like the pic just
email me off line.
