[E-Type] Help with XK-140 steering rack

I have posted my question on the XK list but got no response.
Dick Maury has given me some great advice, but I hate to keep
hounding him!
Years ago I rebuilt the rack on my E-Type, in fact on 2 E-
Types and I followed instructions and all worked well. I am
now working with a very similar XK140 rack, but to date do
not anticipate rebuilding it. My current problem began
because the bellows have hardened, broken up, and for the
most part, fallen off. I had to remove the inner ball joint
on the end of the rack in order to install the boot. I now
know there are two special washers (I have a source) which
lock the rotating parts holding the ball and socket together.
There are a female socket and a spring plus shims. The
purpose of the shims is to minimize the clearance in the ball
and socket by moving the socket in closer to the ball. The
spring is there to keep the minimal amount of clearance
between the ball and socket from rattling around. Do we know
sources for the springs and the shims? Thanks for any
suggestions,–

Mike,

The spring C.8472 appears to be available from XKs Unlimited. They
do not seem to have the shims C.7569. I found the shims in Guy
Broad’s catalog (UK), but did not do an exhaustive search, so they
may be available more locally.

The adjustment shims are the same as the XKE/XJ6/XJ12/XJS
with the shim adjustable tie rods. Readily available from
Jaguar and other sources. These are also the same shims
used to centralize the calipers front and back on the
Jaguars. They come in various thicknesses. The spring is a
bit larger diameter than the later cars. However, it is only
there to keep any rattling down. You can use a spring off of
a XKE 6 cylinder manual rack if you are missing one. If the
tie rod is adjusted properly, then rattling won’t be an
issue anyway.–
