[E-Type] How I Busted My Garmin GPS

So today, the wiff and I took Tweetles out for a bit of a
fun ride. We took along ‘‘Blanche,’’ the British-voiced GPS
Renee uses in her car. I wanted to see how accurate my
estimations were of using the tach-as-speedo (darn good!)
and then…there was this open stretch of I-76, just
begging to be tested…;=)

Coast clear, front and back, I jumped on Tweety’s loud pedal
and got him up to !#@ on the GPS (to maybe CMA, figure out
the speed by reading the number keys for the proper
numbers!). That was at an indicated 5100 RPM. I let off
(gently) after that, because I’d run out of easily-surveyed
road, and at those speeds, one can get busted HARD before
one can toss out the anchor!

I could just about see the fuel gauge dropping in sync with
the GPS…;)–

Stock 1:1 Moss 4th, 3.07 rear, no engine mods, other than
the Mallory and slightly retarded intake cam timing. 91 RON
unleaded, 215-50/15 Yokos (now racing slicks!), and the SO?

She LOVES it! I can’t repeat, what she says about what speed
does to her, in public. I might embarrass Breyer…

Gauges…I wasn’t watchin’ no steeking gauges! I glanced at
the tach to get the peak reading, and SWLTGF read the Garmin.

I left out the busted part: when we arrived in Greeality for
brekkie, I stuffed the Garmin in the cubby box.

Face down.

on top of my house keys.

Whereas, when I got (get) in the car, I support my right on
on said cubby. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.

FYI: it’s only about $20 less to replace Blanche than it is
to fix her…:(–

Check Sears for refurbed stuff. I found my TomTom there for a
really good deal. I vacilated on choice between Garmin and TomTom.
I am pleased with it. Actually, just a toy as I knw how to get to
most of the places I go. But, a few times, it did the job very
nicely. I’ve never secured the mount as I switch it from Jeep to
Jaguar and back. It is in the Jaguar at present, but the Jaguar is
awaiting the promised gas price drop before visiting the station.
That will be Monday whern I go to nearby Martinez for an eye
check. There is one station there that usually beats most a few
cents. Not enmough for an extra trip, but OK when combined with
other stuff. Trouble is HF isn’t far away and …

I chose Samantha’s authoritive voice on my GPS!!

Lloyd,
The update is just a newer map as virtually every map is obsolete as
soon as its printed. I think the Garmin maps are about $100. I’ve
never updated one, didn’t seem to make sense to me as you can buy a
brand new one for ca $150 that will likely work better and have some
new features. I noticed at costco they have a Garmin there that has
lifetime free updates and only costs $20 more. Still doesn’t seem
like a great idea to me, eventually you’re going to want a new one
with new features. Hey look, Wiggy wants a new one now  Oh one
more observation, the batteries don’t last forever either. Mine is 3
or 4 years old, deader than a door nail, must be plugged in to do
anything. Another reason to expect to get a new one every few years if
you need/want one.

Here you are pitching for “planned obsolescence” and yet you own a 40+
year old e-type? Make up your mind!

Actually I run my electronics until they are well past time for
replacement. I’m looking at replacing my 8 year old PC but I roll my
own so its a matter of going on-line and shopping for the components I want.

After I wipe any personal data from the hard drive, the old one will get
donated to an organization that makes working computers available to
those who can’t afford a new one every year.

BTW, my navigator has been married to me for a long time and I learned
long ago to obey her voice commands.

To be honest I hadn’t even thought about that, hello  There is no
battery case and no observed way to get into the thing. Now that you
asked I googled it and found it can be replaced. An aftermarket
seller has it but includes a video explain how to open the it. Its
$30, a lot cheaper than replacing the GPS but if I get a new battery
and map its to close to the price of a new unit.

I think about getting one, but need one only about once a year. And I don’t feel comfortable about the part of the brain that goes lazy when useing one. I just picked up an altilmeter on ebait, so I can monitor altitude while on trips.

I resisted for a long time, now I have 2-one for my wife’s
car and one for mine. It saves me a lot of time. I also like
being able to hit ‘‘home’’ no matter where I am and get
directions!
The biggest problem I have had is having unconditional faith
in the thing, especially after Jill (an Aussie)has it
steered me wrong a couple of times. Jill also persists in
calling WA routes in Washington State (WA7) ‘‘Western
Australia Route 7’’).The other problem I have had is
understanding there may be as many as 4 different ways to
get from A to B depending on if you select ‘‘car’’ or ‘‘truck’’,
and whether you select ‘‘shortest distance’’ or ‘‘fastest
time’’. There is also apparent very poor mapping done,
especially in Walker County Alabama and the Easter
Apalachins (sp). I have also thought about changing my
language to Spanish to help my language skill, but I don;t
know if Jill will be helpful or not!–

Simplest approach is to get the TomTom app for your iPhone (What?
Well get one then!) This makes it work just like the GPS stand
alone units, except, well, it’s also got your phone, your
videocamera, your music, your games, your photo collection, your
email, your NetFlix streaming, your Kindle, etc. in one easy to use
package.

The maps come in regular updates – for free – and can be
installed over your 3G phone service or WiFi while pretty much
anywhere. Screen is plenty big enough, and you can use Google over
your internet to find locations you want to go to. They have a
stand available that suctions to your windshield with a charger and
a GPS antenna amplifier to make the thing even more accurate.

And you don’t have to use it all the time, just when you want to.

Sync for synchronize. Just plug the provided cable mini USB into
a USB port on the PC. Ypou get a plethora of Icons to select from,
incuding the mnor map update and backing up stuff from the GPS to
the PC for recovery if needed.

Yes, mine has the suction cup thing and an articulated mount to
get a good orienttion. But, our vehicle code says only in the
left lower corner or right lower corner of the windshield. I find
the console more comfortable or the little package niche on the XJ
or the similar one in front of the guages on Jeep.

I bought a Garmin nuvii 640 several years ago. I updated
maps once in 6 years for $60. Then its battery went bad.
Garmin convinced me to buy a new one for $150, but it was
not nearly as good as the older one. I have a sandbag mount,
and with the bluetooth feature, I can see my sell phone
director and make cell calls easily and talk through the
Garmin very clearly. The new Garmin does not have the sound
quality nor does the directory from my cell phone transfer
to the Garmin. I spent $15 for the kit abd replaced the
battery (included) in my older, superior Garmin nuvii.
This year I updated both maps again. If i’m going into a
strange (to me) place, like Erie, Pa, Richmond Va etc, and
there may have been freewau construction, I really want good
maps. It becomes obvious when I drive locally and they are
wrong that its time to update maps.–
