[E-Type] Most beautiful car

Seeing as Ferrari apparently made this comment about the E, I was
wondering if there had been any rumblings of him making overtones to
Sayer to come work for him?–

At the time of the Geneva show when Enzo allegedly made the comment
Pininfarina had already been under exclusive contract with Ferrari
for 10 years. I don’t think there was a non-Pininfarina designed
production Ferrari until the Dino 308 GT4 in the mid-70’s. Anyway,
unlikely he made overtures to Malcolm Sayer, who would have
appeared at the time to have been a one hit wonder with the E-type,
his previous designs having been restricted to a couple of race
cars, neither of which Enzo is known to have admired.–

If I confirm it here in open forum will you promise not to tell my wife?

Seriously though Jerry, Norman is a delightful, approachable and down-to-earth individual. A veteran, well-deserved and
long-overdue recipient of one of only 250 OBEs awarded in the UK this year. Someone who has certainly achieved far more
than most of us are ever likely to as well as being a superb ambassador for Jaguar.

Sadly, I suspect some of the things he has said over the years (or been quoted as saying) may not be things he has
actually said or meant. For example, he was recently quoted as saying during a published Motorsport Magazine interview
that he shaved 5 seconds off the Le Mans lap record with the prototype D-Type (it wasn’t Norman driving - it was Tony
Rolt). He is also quoted as saying it was he who set the UK closed lap record with the XJ13 (it wasn’t - it was David
Hobbs). There are many other instances where Norman’s words and meaning have perhaps been misinterpreted over the years.
Norman is so intimately tied up with and is such an important part of Jaguar that I wonder whether when he says ‘‘I’’, he
really means to say something like ‘‘We’’ as in ‘‘Us at Jaguar’’?

Whatever, I hope he will continue to add to his achievements and accolades for many years to come - ‘‘Sir Norman’’
certainly has a nice ring to it?–

And therein lies the rub, Chris. Those who above all value evidence
in matters as weighty as this discount that which cannot be
substantiated or at least corroborated. Not in any way to cast
doubt on the veracity of Sir Norman’s assertion, it has been said
if one retells a tall tale often enough he comes to believe it is
so. It is likely prudent to chalk this one up to just another one
of life’s great unanswered questions, like why Buicks have
portholes and men nipples, or why, if she’s really French, the
Statue of Liberty lacks armpit hair. We shall never know for sure.–

In reply to a message from V12 Racer sent Fri 2 Jan 2015:

Neville,

Sadly all of us (most?) have said things that may not be
what we actually meant, or perhaps even exaggerated some of
our own accomplishments? Does that mean that every
utterance is false or suspect? Well, if so that makes the
whole idea of ‘‘bearing witness’’ useless, doesn’t it? And
there can never be truly verified ‘‘fact’’ other than what we
witness personally – and that has been pretty soundly
discredited too!

Norman said it, it was not about any personal mark or
achievement; I am not sure, but perhaps Ferrari was still
alive to correct it when it was first claimed? Certainly
there are others familiar with Ferrari’s opinions who could
counter it even today? I have never heard anything to the
contrary.

Despite the earth-shaking importance of this statement, I
choose to accept it on this flimsy evidence while holding
open the possibility of misinterpretation…

Just to be clear, Norman isn’t ‘Sir Norman’ Nick. Being
being Canadian you probably knew that but others here
might not understand that requires a knighthood not an OBE
or MBE or BEM etc.

I think Neville put it very well and it’s a bit like
sports fans referring to ‘we’ even if they never played a
competitive game. How much more understandable if rather
than a mere fan, it was the chief physio or former manager
talking, or an ex-player and the only survivor from some
of those moments?

I called on him completely unannounced one time (which is
not as rude as it sounds, at least in the North of England
or Midlands). He was getting some dinner ready (lunch) and
couldn’t have been nicer. Top bloke, but not infallible
after all this time.

I wouldn’t take just anyone’s word over something like this but given

Funny how these discussions have a way of mutating into something
else, eh? It’s sort of a corollary to Emerson’s ‘‘who you are speaks

unreasonable. We are all human and subject to human frailties, the

there is no conclusive proof that what Enzo Ferrari might have said
in Geneva about the E-type was what Norman Dewis heard, but it is
what Norman Dewis honestly remembers. We can certainly grant him
that. I can picture the great man gazing at the E-type, struck by
its beauty, gesturing genuine respect with his hands (as Italians
do) and exclaiming ‘‘Che bella!’’ and the rest, as they say, was left
to interpretation and the natural laws of expansion. Who knows?
We’ve been muddling over this ‘‘most beautiful car in the world’’
