[E-Type] Muffler (silencer) replacement

Need member advice. I damaged my silencers driving into a
garage to get petrol. Raised manhole covers. (idiot). Anyway
I found what looked like an original mufflers on the web.
The ones that were damaged were Walkers, but could not find
a replacement on their site. Put them on and they sound
terrible. So quiet from the old ones that I hate to drive
the car. It was real throaty on the old ones. Need to get
back that noise from the exhaust. Anybody had the same
problem and any ideas on using alternative mufflers. Thanks.

I installed these

http://www.flopro.com/bafflespecs.html

used a pair that were 4’’ in diameter and used a length that
would work with some adaptors I had a muffler shop make to
connect to the stock exhaust system. Used the stock chrome
resonators. Sounded good, not loud, not blatty, not like a
jacked up pickup truck. Nice understated burble at idle
and a mild growl when on the gas. Never intrusive.–

Get a 4 ft long piece of 1/2’’ steel rod and bash it through
the baffles from one end to the other of the muffler to make a
hole.

Reinstall. If it’s too quiet, rinse and repeat until it sounds
good.–

Yup.

When we didn’t have the bucks to buy ‘‘Smitty’s’’ we did
that. gutted mfflers was the term.

Later, I had a 56 small window VW and later a 60 rag top
of the same specie. After decades of cars that growled,
these were anemic. But, that LA commute made their gas
mileage attractive. The stock equipment id a conventional
chambered unit mounted across the back. the outlets were
little silencers, the chrome tubes, with a glass liner. So,
a sharp bar into each followed by a few whacks with the BFH
til the inner chamber was penetrated. Much better.

The elegant way to gut a muffler was to hacksaw off one
end, remove the guts and weld the end back on. a skilled
guy did that at the end seam and his weld seam was so
perfect it looked factory. Good for the political guys that
used factory as a measure for decibels. Stock is good,
anything else is not???

Midas glass packs with the E-Type silencers is a perfect, reversible, and inexpensive mod.

I’m quite pleased with the set I got from SNG – to my ear
they have the growl (under load) I associate with the
E-Types but still pleasant for cruising.

Poking holes in things may give a fine sound on the
boulevard but not sure I (or my wife) would enjoy it on a
1000 miles highway drive.

Oddly the set I got from SNG were made in Mexico. From
there they went to the U.K. and then by boat to New
Hampshire and finally by UPS back to me – I live about 60
miles from the Mexican border.–
