[E-Type] Number identification on a 1968 Series 1.5 OTS

Hi All,

I’m trying to identify the numbers on a friend’s father’s
1968 series 1.5. The engine block number was easy enough to
see. However, there is not a head number located behind the
front of the head and he’s pretty confident that it is the
original head. I also looked at pictures of a 68 on ebay
and it doesn’t show a head number. Did Jaguar change the
location of the head number at some point?

Please excuse my question that I’m sure has been asked a
million times, but I have limited internet for a few days
and couldn’t find the info with a quick search.

Also, is there anyway to check the transmission number
without removal of it? The car actually has the tunnel
removed, but a big spider persuaded me not to take a look
for it.

This poor car makes me very sad, as it was put out to
pasture for at least 30 years and is going to take a miracle
to ever see the road again.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Chris the experts may chime in and say I am wrong but I have
looked at a lot of 68’s and photos over the years and have
not seen a number stamping on the front of the head like
there is on most of the Series 1’s I have seen. My 68 has no
stamping there.

My book says the transmission number is stamped on a
shoulder at the left hand rear corner of the gear box casing
and on the top cover. Has been several years since I found
mine to confirm it matched the data plate but my memory is
it was not hard to find.

FYI on my 68 the body number is on a small riveted plate
under the rear licence plate

On my 69 S2 the gearbox numbers are stamped on both the
case and the top cover:

Should be able to both with the tunnel lid off.

As for a miracle - not necessarily. Time &/or money are
the only miracles needed. Good luck.–

Thank you all for the help. I appreciate it greatly. It
was in a field in PA for at least 30 years and it looks
like it.
Thanks again
