[E-Type] Re: Stainless Steel Screws

I started replacing some of the body screws on my Series III OTS. There are
many screws, especially on the gravel guards under the car, that are rusted
and to clean them up is a waste of time. I am installing type 302 stainless
screws in UNF threads. I am not looking for concours quality reproduction,
rather to update the hardware as needed to a higher grade, and in most cases
eliminate the rust problem.

If anyone is interested these screws are available through McMaster Carr Inc.
732-329-3200. The various sizes required are available in box lots.

Ron, does McMaster Carr sell retail or only wholesale?

If you wanted to do a real service to the List, you could recommend some
types and sizes to us.

Randall

I don’t want to add to my reputation as a naysayer, but make sure you don’t
use these stainless bolts on any structural application as they are
significantly weaker than Grade 5 bolts. Also, avoid using them on any
aluminum bits, as the resulting galvanic corrosion will be horrific. That
said, They are great for low strength applications, especially on the
underside of the car. I use them everywhere I can in my vehicles.

Braman

McMaster Carr sells wholesale. The have distribution centers all over the
United States. They are similar to W W Grainger, but more towards the machine
tool industry.
I would be happy to add to the list the sizes of screws that are available.
If you wish I can copy the pages and fax them to anyone who is interested.

If you have business, write to them on your letter head and obtain their
catalogue. The catalogue is about 4" thick.

I am only replacing non structural screws in the bonnet, stone guards, and on
the dash for the A/C units. I also installed them for the seat brackets.

If anyone wants more information, contact me direct.
