[E-Type] S3: How to remove panel with round 8-pin headlight connector?

Hi all

I have a headlight that comes and goes as it pleases. It
would seem there is a loose connection on the header block
inside the panel directly ahead of the left front wheel.

I have removed the pozidrive screws but when I try to remove
the 11mm (7/16’’) bolts, they just seem to turn without
coming out. Its as if they have nuts on the other side
which turn with the bolt.

Can anyone advise me on what is going on here please?

TIA
Philip–

Have you pulled the left headlight. Doing so will give access
to the area from the other side.–

Dear Philip,
you’re going to love this…

It’s because they have nuts on the other side which are turning
with the bolts. A 7/16’’ spanner on the other side, held by putting
your hand through gap left once you have removed the front
indicator is where you are heading next.

Either that or wait until I have finished my covered headlight kit
for the s3 and take the whole sugar scoop and trim off…

kind regards

Thanks chaps

I went through the headlight.

Once the panel was off, it struck me that it was rather
heavy for such a small panel. It seemed that there was a
lot of rubberizing on it.

It weighed 1.2kg when removed.

I took an old chisel to it and set about removing as much
rubberizing as I could.

Weighed it again: 0.95kg.

This confirms my theory that my car is carrying A LOT of
extra weight, not only with excessive rubberizing but also
in terms of at least 3 layers of paint.

I see a BIG resto job coming up - as soon as I have my
Jensen Interceptor S3 in my garage…

Best regards
Philip

PS: There WAS one wire that was unplugged from that header.–

Apologies to Philip for hijacking the thread…

Mike - it’ll all be new. The original s1 headlight surround was
actually quite a thick casting, bolted onto the front of the bonnet
and doesn’t fit the different shape of the later, wider mouthed
bonnets. This means that the headlight scoop is also a different
piece of 3d geometry as is the glass.

The only way to use the original trim and glass is to TIG weld in
new sheet metal to make it look like a s1 bonnet and then purchase
all of the 1961 oem (but probably now repro) parts. That would be a
more expensive route and hugely increase the work needed to fit it.

Although it is sounds ‘‘easier’’ just bolt something on from the
outside, it would be aesthetically less pleasing to do so, as the
smooth original lines of the bonnet are ruined. The geometry of the
s2/s3 bonnet simply doesn’t lend itself to such a large design
change.

Obviously, those non-captive 7/16 nuts and bolts around the edge of
the rear diaphragms will be replaced with new screws held by
captive fasteners - which solves Philip’s problem at a stroke.

kind regards

Mike that was our resident pommy, politely taking the blame
for your error (hijacking this thread), in true British ‘‘old
boy’’ fashion.

Since us South Africans are well known for our lack of tact,
it is my privilege to tactlessly spell out the situation.

Since it was Mike’s first post and he’s having to learn ‘‘the
forum culture’’, Mike is excused with a warm ‘‘Welcome to the
forum!!’’

Hijacking my own thread back then, I’ve installed a longer
pipe from the headlight drain which now dumps water at the
back of the scoop under the nose.–

Philip - note how my last paragraph neatly brought it back to the
topic in question.

Mike - you can email me directly if you want to talk about covered
headlights.

I did notice Marek but yes, I failed to make mention of the
elegance of that recovery
