[E-Type] S3: Mag Wheel adventure

Because it is so hard to find a 205/70/15 size tyre in South
Africa (and for other reasons), I decided to get a set of
17’’ Mag wheels for the E.

I soon found out that getting wheels for a jag is a problem
due to its unigue dimensions and ended up speaking to
Compomotive in the UK who was most accommodating and helped
me with a set of MO1881 wheels with the following specs:
PCD: 120.56
Diameter 18’’ (yes, the only size in which they could meet
the spec)
Width: 8’’
Offset: 40mm
Centre bore: 76.6mm

Got the wheels and fitted a 245/45/18 tyre to one of them
and fitted it to the left rear of the car where I had about
one finger width of clearance left between the tyre and the
wheel fender. Right side has more clearance for some reason.

Fitted with 245/45/18 to the car but this tyre is much too
close to the body work for comfort.

I am now waiting for a 225/50/18 which should only sit 3mm
further outwards on the Compomotive rim than the 225/65/15
currently fitted.

Will keep you informed as things progress.

Best regards
Philip–

Got the new rims fitted with a 225/50/18 tyre today and it
seems to work. I now have the same clearance between the
fender and the tyre as what existed with the 225/65/15
tyre(little but enough).

Some interesting figures:

225/65/15 tyre + chrome steel rim: 22.3Kg (excl hubcap)
245/45/18 tyre + mag rim: 24.5Kg
225/50/18 tyre + mag rim: 23.1Kg

Philip - do you still have your rear bump stops in place? I
found I had to remove mine on my S1 to allow fitment of 225
rubber.–

Yes, I do. I do believe I have some rubbing on extreme
articulation but have not gone to any trouble trying to find
where it is.

The track width on the S1 is quite a bit narrower than the
S3 is it not? Surely there could be other differences too?

Philip,

The S1 track is 50’’, S3 is 54.4/53.4.

Even the S1 with stock wheels and tires has some rubbing on extreme
articulation. I drive pretty hard and I have never seen any marks
on my 185-15 tires or my 225/50-15s (biggest I have used). Bump
stops are still in place though I have turned the rubber parts
around so they lean inward.
