[E-Type] seatbelts - a new look at an old topic

My thanks to Chris Fell for sending me pictures of his 67
2+2 seat belt installation. This raises an interesting
question. Chris says his car had retractable belts fitted
at the factory. The reel is mounted behind the rear
seat ‘‘armrest panel’’ (which also has a radio speaker in
it), is anchored on the inner sill and the B post. Chris is
in the UK so my question is, were any US cars fitted with
these belts or mounts. My 68 2+2 does not have a mount in
the B pillar though I plan to check behind the rear
seat ‘‘armrest side panel’’ today. It seem unlikely that the
factory would have differentiated the bodies in this way a
whole year apart

Steve,

I have online a copy of Jaguar’s installation instructions
for 3-point seat belts for 4.2s including the 2+2. These
belts did not have retractors, but I assume that the
mounting points have not changed. The front seat shoulder
strap mount should be right in the bottom cantrail –
padded window surround – not lower, at least in cars I am
familiar with. The mounts can be hard to find but don’t
give up!

Thanks Jerry. My car had factory non-retractable seat belts
fitted so the mount points are all as indicated in your
original documentation. However, my question relates to
whether there were or are any mount points in the B pillar
and inside the padded trim sections either side of the rear
seat.
Regards

Steve, yes the 2+2 at least has a third attach point
behind the rear quarter window. Mine with only a rear seat
lap belt was covered by the cantrail panel. My front belts
are three point non retractable, Kangol brand I belive.
Hope this helps.

I had a series 3 with retractable seat belts factory fitted. The
mmech’ was behind the large padded cover behind the B posts with a
3rd point toward the top of the B post and the lower bolt through
the inner sill.

When stripped the mech’ is bolted to the inner sill behind the
padded cover and exits from the cover with a cut out in the cover
to allow movement of the belt material.

Neat installation
