[E-Type] Series 1 bonnet problem

Does anybody know what that gunk is that Jaguar used to glue down
the brackets on the underside of a series 1 bonnet? I have one that
has come off and I don’t know how best to fix it back on. I presume
they didn’t weld the brackets on for fear or warping the bonnet but
I’m tempted to get it spot welded back on!!

Thanks in advance for any help :o)–

In reply to a message from PaulColeman sent Sun 20 Jul 2003:

Paul,
The bonding agent is called Sikoflex 221, it is available from
Adesco in the UK Phone 0114 269 1777.
It costs 9.10 a tube, 2 tubes will easily do the job.
I think one of the major reasons for not welding the bonnet was
warping, also the components can be moved around for a good fit.

Gentlefolk -

Does anyone on the List live near Williams Bay, Wisconsin, who might be
willing to screen a classic car (not a Jag) for me, that I am
considering buying? I mainly want someone to “kick the tires” and tell
me whether the car looks as good in person as it does in its pictures,
before I travel from the Washington, D.C. area. If there is anyone who
would be willing to do this, please send me on off-List e-mail.

Thanks.

Paul Bj

I’d like to use Paul’s post to thank him for performing the same service for
me for a car located in his area. His gracious offer to view a car for me
revealed a number of issues that were not apparent from a collection of
about 10 photographs or the seller’s description. It was an ebay car that I
eventually decided not to bid on thanks to Paul’s in-person inspection.

If other listers have thought about offering to view a car, I would like to
encourage you to consider it if in your area. Even if the prospective buyer
plans to have the car professionally inspected by a mechanic (which I would
recommend), having a fellow enthusiast view (and photograph, if possible) is
an absolutely invaluable service.

I am very grateful to Paul and Craig T. (who also looked at a car for me)
who were so generous with their time and expertise. Other listers have also
offered to view cars that I eventually decided were not worthy of inspection
(in part due to off-list discussions with them) and I am grateful to those
listers as well. I still have not found the right FHC so I may still have
the opportunity to take them up on their kind offer to go see and drive a
car .

So sincere thanks to everyone who has given so freely of their time and
advice, and if you are near Williams Bay, Wisconsin, consider contacting
Paul. I hope to have the opportunity in the future to return the favor to
other listers that might be considering a car in my area.
