[E-Type] SII OTS Sun Visor Hardware

Yet again my car kit c/o PO is missing these items. Rather
than spend $150 I will make them this winter. Thanks to the
archives( Geo Hahn in particular as posted 15 June '13 ) I
know that the visor pivots on a 2 part shaft affixed at
each end to the post cap and the central post. I would be
very grateful for info in the shaft size , diameter and
length, and how the 2 parts are joined in the middle ( if at
all! ). And any pics of the parts not installed. TIA.–

I expect the sun visors that came with my late S1 will be the same
as those fitted to your S2, John. It will be a challenge to
duplicate the hardware. By the time you get it all made and plated
it will likely make more sense to drop the $150, but here you go.

The hardware pieces are of course handed. This is a shot of the
original RHS visor and hardware:

As you can see the shafts do not meet. The visor itself is 19 3/8’’
long x 3 3/8’’ wide x 1’’ thick and is made of two sheets of thin,
unbacked vinyl material with heat sealed edges covering a stiff but
resilient foam. This is a detail shot of the outer assembly:

and the inner:

and this is of the two disassembled:

the stock from which the shafts are made is an oddball diameter -
just over 9/32’‘. The threaded end of the outer shaft has been
turned down to 1/4’’ diameter a distance of 3/8’’ and threaded UNF.
The two nuts are a thin (5/32’‘) 1/4’’ hex nut and a domed nut, UNF.

The inner shaft stock started out 7’’ long then flattened and bent
the attachment end. The part that inserts into the visor is 4 7/8’’
long. The outer shaft stock was 7 1/4’’ long to begin with, the part
that inserts into the visor is 5 3/4’'. The outer shaft has a slight
S bend in it to keep the visor in position as it is adjusted. You
can see it more clearly in this shot:

The bracket that attaches to the windshield pillar is made from 14
ga. steel. These two shots should give you enough to fab a
reasonable facimile.

Hi Nick, What a fantastic response to my questions, which
are now fully answered. I am very grateful for the time you
took to answer me. The archives will be the richer as
well…assuming they work after the refit!–

Nick nice pics of that area. One observation is the visor looks
like it is from a S3 car. The 68 and series 2 were a bit wider. I
am not sure anyone is making correct S2 flaps and so it is not
uncommon to see the more narrow S3 visors. Possibly it is just the
pic.–

Possible, George. I haven’t owned the car from new (1982)
so the visors might have been replaced by one of the POs.
Easy enough to verify by measurement. These are 3 3/8ths
wide.–

Nice detail. Should help on my 70 ots. I will keep looking but seems that i have all except center rods.

In my humble opinion, they seem to be in a horrible spot for an average size individual. Took mine off the car the 1st week I owned. Besides the cheap plastic material they are made of is a disgrace to the overall quality look of the E-type. In the all the time since, I have owned the car, I have only once wished for about 15 minutes that I still had then installed. Your goal is a lot of work for very little gain.
