[E-Type] Silly (seal) question

Is there to be a ‘‘foam’’ seal between the top of the heater squirrel
cage and the fresh air inlet on the bonnet? I see that the most of
the usual suppliers offer one, but I don’t ever actually recall
seeing one except in several photos of the same early car on
various pages of the SNG Barratt catalog. And on that, the foam ‘‘o-
ring’’ is mounted on top of the heater (around the wire mesh). I
can’t find any other examples like that in any of the books and
manuals that I have. Should there be a seal, and would it be
mounted on the bonnet side (and therefore never showing up in many
pictures)? The paint on top of my heater box is noticably worn
there and I intend to clean that up and repaint it, and therefore
wondering if said seal is required/helpful.

Thanks,

Dennis

The seal mounts on the heater air intake that is bolted to the bonnet.

Dennis,
Yes, there should be a seal, glued to the plastic duct on the
bonnet, not the heater. It keeps engine fumes from getting sucked
into the heater inlet, and also ensures you’re getting cool outside
air, rather than hot, engine compartment air. So I’d consider it
fairly important.–

If you had a foam ‘‘seal’’ under the lid of the wire screen, it was
more likely to keep the wire mesh from rattling rather than to seal
anything. The real seal is, as the others have mentioned, on the
plastic duct mounted on the bonnet. I made mine of cork, but I
suppose it could have been foam.–

Dennis,
FWIW I have a foam “o” ring gasket on my car its attached to the bonnet, not the heater. Its been there for the 26 years that I’ve owned it. BTW no question is silly

Gents, as an experiment one time I tried making one of these heater duct
seals out of common half-inch thick (or so) black foam padding. You can make
a very nice one by taking two appropriate sized cans, say, #10 tomato can
(or maybe the large peanut can - I can’t remember the cans I used, but they
will be obvious upon comparison) and one other, stripping the labels off,
cutting both ends out, heating one of the rims with a torch and using that
heated rim to burn a hole into the padding. Use the larger one first and
then the smaller to hole the center out and you can get a pretty accurate
and neat seal for next to nothing.
