File this one in your wierd starter problems folder.
Sometimes the starter would make a machinegun type noise and the
engine would turn over very slowly.
Sometimes when hot or cold, and after checking the battery, all the
cables, engine-frame ground cable and rebuilding the starter.
Turns out the starter relay was on its way out. Replaced it and all is
fine.
