[E-Type] Top of windshield to chrome trim seal (OTS's)

Is there a seal that goes inside the ‘U’ shaped chrome
piece that sits on top of the windshield of the open cars?
My glass installer says there should be one, but the
suppliers say it’s just filled with glass ‘goo’.

Mine has the seal. I got it from a local installer.

Your glass installer is correct. Mine looks like the old threaded friction
tape was installed before the chrome piece. It is to act as a cushion
between the chrome and the glass.

This is what I did recently, it worked well:

I had some 1/16’’ sheet neoprene, and I cut a long narrow strip to
fit into the chrome channel. The guy who sold me my windshield
also gave me a bottle of CRL 1716 Windshield Repair sealant. Feel
free to contact me off line for contact information on this
product. I laid a bed of sealant into the channel, put the
neoprene strip in, then another bead of sealant. I then placed it
onto the top of the windshield, getting a good ooze out of the
channel. I then screwed one of the screws into the tension rod end
piece to hold the middle down, then installed the end caps onto the
A-pillar to hold the ends down. The channel is now firmly attached
to the windshield, but not rigidly, as the sealant maintains a good
bit of compliance. One thing - be sure that the chrome strip fits
perfectly onto the windshield, if it doesn’t it will want to pull
off and you won’t get good attachment.

I tried to source a real gasket or seal, but the usual that is
closest to me had no info and I called several auto glass outfits
in my area and they could source the glass and the main seal, but
nothing on the top seal.

FWIW, the auto glass shop where I got my strip of rubber for this had a roll
of the stuff and cut off a piece for me. I just draped it over the top edge
of the windshield, put on the chrome, trimmed off any exposed rubber and
that was it. That was 4 years ago and I’ve had no problems with it.

In reply to a message from throwaway8 sent Wed 20 Oct 2004:

There was an original material called ‘‘everseal’’ that wrapped
around the top of the windshield under the chrome stip. It is
available from the usuals and comes in a roll of ~1’’ wide tape
form. It snugs the chrome to the glass and the excess is easily
trimmed off with an exacto or razor blade. Personally I wouldn’t
put goop in place of the everseal.

Incidentally, the everseal was also used on the windows at the
bottom to cushion and grip the carrier.

Thanks for all the info.
I’ll ask Welshes about the ‘Everseal’. This seems the
best solution.
