[E-Type] Trouble locating engine number

I cannot seem to find where the engine number is stamped on
my early '69 Jag … I know that it is not stamped on the
head, and so I have been trying to look for it above the oil
filter to no avail - access is very difficult, so maybe I
simply can’t get a bead on it - I’ve tried sticking my
camera down there and taking several photos, but nothing is
apparent, other than ‘‘JAGUAR’’ and ‘‘4.2’’ in large letters on
the side of the block. The other place I looked was near the
flange where the transmission attaches to the engine … but
I think that was a later location, and it doesn’t appear to
be there either!

How big are the letters/numbers on the stamp? Could someone
help me with some very precise location information?

Thanks!–

Julian,

The engine number for your 1969 E-Type should be located on the left

side of the engine where it meets the bell housing. This is approximately
where the engine oil dipstick is located. It may not be visible if there
is a build up of oil and dirt. Use a bright flashlight or drop light and
you will see it. The numbers are about 1/2 inch tall.

The earlier engines had the engine number stamped on the block above the

oil filter and on the cylinder head but that was discontinued along the way.

I have the original 4 speed manual transmission, but I don't believe

that would make any difference. Even if you have the automatic transmission
the engine number should be in the same place.

If you still have problems write back and I will send you a picture of

the engine number on my 1969 E-Type FHC.

Paul sorry but that is not correct. The number should be on the
block above the oil filter on that car. The flange number came
later when the E type and the XJ6 began to share basic engines. A
friend of mine refers correctly to them as 3rd stage or EX engines.–

George is right (of course he is  assuming your engine is
original, the engine # is stamped on the flange in such a way that
it should be readable from above. It’s on the (slightly) horizontal
surface of the flange.

If you fail to find it, look for a photo of where it should be
stamped. S1 engines are stamped in the same location. If your
engine is dirty, spray some brake cleaner on a rag and wipe the
area. If your engine has been rebuilt, run your finger over the
area to feel for faint stamping marks. I mention this from my own
experience. In my pursuit of perfection, I applied several coats
of engine paint thick enough to obscure the number. A free tip for
those in the midst of a rebuild…mask your engine # or use less
paint ;)–

There seems to be some disagreement between the two possible
locations here, but I will put my vote with George. The number will
be found on the horizontal part of the block directly adjacent to
where the oil filter block bolts to the engine block. It is within
1/2’’ of the edge of the block. The letters/numbers are stamped, and
are about 3/8’’ or so high I guess (based on a fuzzy photo I’m
looking at). If your engine has a lot of gunk, or engine paint on
it, you may need to clean/scrape away in that area.

Good luck,

George,

My very original looking data plate states the engine number of my

1969 E-Type FHC as 7R7256-9 and that engine number is stamped on the flange
where it meets the bell housing on the left side of the engine near the oil
dipstick.

From the documents I have a "7R" engine is appropriate for the

Series II E-Type.

On your list below my engine comes after the engine 7R6306 so it was

made after the break in of the new numbering method.

I expect that Julian will find his engine number in the same place,

unless his engine is earlier than 7R6306 or has been swapped out in the past
with an earlier 4.2L XK engine with the number stamped on the block above
the oil filter.

Julian,

Please let us know what you find.

Julian,

Based on the information about the break in point of the engine number

location, if your engine is original (7R3684) it was built before the
location change and it should be stamped on the horizontal area of the block
above the oil filter.

It is it likely that you will have a build up of grease and dirt on top

of the numbers.

Julian,

Look in that greasy area between the oil pressure sender (the cylinder

with the wire at the top) and the large “JAGUAR” cast into the side of the
block.

You will have to scrape off the grease and once you do the stamped

numbers will be visible.

Julian,

The device is the oil pressure sender. You need to look on the
horizonal (flat) area of the engine block just adjacent to that
sender. Judging by the cobwebs and grime in that area, you haven’t
yet tried cleaning it up with a rag or something similar. If the
area is not wet oily (which it doesn’t appear to be), I’d be
inclined to give it a scrub with a wire brush which will dislodge
the caked on grime better than a rag. Maybe then you will see
engine number stamping.

G’Day Julian,
It should be on horizontal flat bit to left of the letter G in word Jaguar
in your picture, just to right of where oil filter base bolts up. Yes a bit
tight to get your hand with a wire brush in there. Treat your car to a new
oil filter and while old case is out you will be able to get hand and wire
brush in the path you used to get filter out. If it is not there you have a
block from a different year (later) engine. Interestingly about 10 years
ago I obtained an engine block that came out of a Daimler from Hong Kong.
It did not have a number anywhere (when doing my car) so I was able to “fix”
it to original spec. Number is probably in the wrong place now because
stamp did not work well on pimply cast surface so it is now on flange where
bell housing bolts up, stamps worked well on that already smoothed surface.
;-)) Local stealer that I asked about this said some ‘4.2 Jaguar’ engines
destined as overseas Daimler replacement parts were supplied without
numbers. Who knows??? Only sure fact, it did not have a number anywhere
(or evidence of one being ground off) inside or out on a totally
disassembled block, detail of it’s paper history lost in surrender of place
to China. In hindsight I should have ground a little flat strip above the
the oil filter to stamp number, next time…

You have SU carbs on an American 69 4.2? Twin or triple? Judging by
the lugs for the XJ engine mounts you certainly have the later
style engine casting, but as stated the flat uncleaned area just
between the G and the sender should reveal the thin stamped numbers
when you clean it off.

John,
I also had one of those 4.2L unmarked motors. I bought it in a basket
about 30 years ago and gave the block away about 9 years ago. I
looked everywhere for a number, none visible. I was told that motors
replaced under warranty were not marked… do not know if that’s true
or not. Unlikely this block came from Hong Kong, bought it in NY, but
again do not know.

Julian,

That would be 7R3684-8 and not 7R36848. The number after the dash,

“-8” I guess in your case, indicates the compression ratio of 8:1.

I wonder why your compression ratio is 8:1 and not 9:1 as with the

other 4.2L XK engines. Is it possible that the number after the dash in
your case is really a “9” and not an “8”? Sometimes the numbers are a bit
difficult to read.
