Can anyone tell me the correct way to fit these?!!

Hi Paul,

I don’t have any on my car, but in my long hours spent lounging upside-down while under the dash admiring the entertaining and bewildering rat’s nest of wiring I have noted some bendable tabs located under dash that obviously are there for holding up the hardura panels.

They are not intuitive, are they? I won’t see my car until July
but I can get some photos then if you have not figured them out by
then.–

You are not alone! I installed a new interior from a kit, it came
with the underdash Harduras. After laying upside down long enough
to give me pain, I decided that I would go without them! Never did
find out what holds them in place!

I’m not sure which car you have but on my '64 OTS there is a
very small one that is glued to the right of the steering
column towards the front. It should be obvious from the
shape which way it fits. The large one fits on the
passenger side, and is again held up by glue in the front
and in the rear it will be held up by the underdash
cardboard, or metal panels. I’ve seen some originals that
were metal. I’m not sure if they all were originally, but
the ones you buy now are thick cardboard.

The last piece is kind of a pain. It goes to the left of
the steering col and again is glued up in front and has
cutouts that fit around the steering column mount. You need
to make sure the part that goes directly over the column is
glued up well or it will sage and rub on the column and
u-joint. In the very front of mine the edge was right next
to a pedal box stud so I put a fender washer on it to hold
up that corner tight. Depending on the year of your car
your pedal box may or may not fit this way. The rear of
that panel is again held up by the little triangular
cardboard panel.–

My underdash panels were aluminum, maybe .032 thick and were
hardura covered. Typically,(at least on the two largest)
they have two holes on the iside which goes towards the
firewall, and two tabs on the side which goes towards they
ngine compartment.
I straigtened and cleaned them and covered them with black
vinyl to match the dash. The ‘‘tabs’’ were bent down sightly,
allowing the panels to slide onto the dash edge with the tab
preventing it from going above while the rest of the panel
sits on the edge. There are a couple of other panels which
have to be shaped a bit to fit around the steering cokun abd
to the right of the steering column.
In the rear, I used sheet metal screws (SS) in finishing
washers into existing holes in the sheet metal of the dash.
I do not claim this is corrct, but its what I did.

Mike’s description matches the way they came on my 62. I recovered
mine during restoration, but never refitted them. Good thing, as
over the years they would have had to come off and on about one
million times for access to wiring, instruments, etc…
