Hi Philbert,
Taking it off is pretty straight forward, First disconnect the
battery because you’ll need to remove the wires for the lamp
in the center of the dash top, then it will have 4 fasteners
that hold it on, one on each side and two in the drop down
area in the center. I have had to remove the trim on the
sides by the nuts to be able to get on to the nuts, but each
car is slightly different so look and see before you remove
any trim.
I always put a rag over the center area to catch the nuts that
are in this area cause they usually get away from me going
back on.
The defroster hose will usually slip out as you lift the top
off but are a pain to get back in when you replace the vinyl
top, I usually find it easier to remove the panels under the
dash so that I can guide them back in place.

Regarding the headliner, It would have to be very dirty before
I’d mess with it, the foam/glue is very fragile and will
likely come apart leaving you with big bubbles hanging down.

Good luck,
Cheers,
LLynn–

Philbert;
I think you really mean remove the vinyl from the top of
of the rash board and not how to remove the dash top from
the car.
I will tell you how I did it and you can give it a try if
you choose.
I removed the dash top from the car. then I used a heat
gun and a box cutter or utility knife. I started with an
edge that was a little loose applied a little heat and
then started to peel the vinyl away from the foam cover of
the dash top. Most came away easily but a few areas I
needed to use the box cutter to separate the two layers.
This vinyl has no ‘cloth’ backing and is fairly stiff. I
was not able to find a like replacement so had a
upholstery shop use regular vinyl.
Hope this helps and is what you desired.

Regards, Joel.–

Hello
Thank you for your advice, but I’m looking good simply remove
to remove the dash top from the car.

I understand that there would be 4 screws, that’s right ? (I
do not speak English). I still have to find it listed under
a gasket (how present this lining that covers the screws ? )

mMy be a pattern on the internet?

Thank you–

Philbert,

The screws are welded to the bottom of the dashtop, project
downwards through brackets attached to the body, and are
secured with nuts installed from below. Two screws at
outside edge of dashtop beside door openings and two in
centre part of dash accessible after dropping gauge panel.
Small machine screws something like 8-32 thread and hard to
reach but proper nut driver will work.

In reply to a message from Philbert sent Sun 31 Jul 2016:

Not screws. The dashtop itself is held to the dash by 4
studs which are attached to the dashtop. You can find two
of them in the fuse panel area, about 2/3 of the way back
and near the edge of each side. As previously pointed out
they go through a bracket. You want to remove the nuts
from those two studs. The other two studs are at the
extreme ends of the dashtop, near the chrome finishers.
They each go through a metal bracket welded to the car
body. Again, remove the nuts. Then the whole assembly can
be removed.–

Philbert –

One thing I did that made reassembly and subsequent
disassembly easier was to use long nuts like these for the
attachments at each end of the topper:

I cannot recall whether I thought of that myself or read it
here on the forum (probably the latter).–

Mine didn’t last 5 years (I replaced it in 1987). Today, it is festooned with straight-pins that keep it up out of my hair. It’s kinda ugly but it works till I get ready to replace it.

Morning Mike,
I’m surprised that yours only lasted 5 years, I installed a new one in my 73 ~15-16 years ago and ‘knock on wood’ it’s still good. It’s not a job I’d want to do every 5 years!
Cheers,
LLynn

LLynn,

I might not have used the official replacement material- As I recall I had an upholstery service come do it at the house, they used what they had that was close… I got what I paid for-

If you buy a quality headliner product from virtually any upholstery supply shop I think the key to longevity lies mostly in the glue selection.

Mine seems to have failed via the foam backing disintegrating- Truthfully I don’t pay it much mind any more, but one day I’ll have all the other more important items dealt with and will get on this one.
