[E-Type] XJR-6 engine

Dear people,

I’m not a regular here and the purists will instantly hate
me for this, but that’s life I guess;)
I think it was at the last Stoneleigh event that someone
mentioned another guy had put an XJR-6 engine into his
E-type. A local madman has asked me to try and do the same
with/to his car (I honestly don’t know why me or this rather
nice ser I 1/2, which is completely stripped btw) and I’d
like to get in touch with whoever’s done aything like this
to hear how things went. I can see that it would be
embarassing to reply to me in public with valuable
information, so any private messages are greatfully received
and please trust me: they’ll never know it was you.
Before you ask: Lumps! isn’t interested 'coz it isn’t a
proper lump as far as they’re concerned. Putting on my
flameproof coat now and ducking for cover…–

Arnoud,
You’re telling us the ‘‘Lumps’’ list doesn’t consider an AJ6-
powered E-type ‘‘pure’’ enough for their list? What is it? Not
enough cylinders? You won’t have to cut enough of the frame
rails? That is truly bizarre!
I don’t think anyone here will stone you for doing this,
especially since it’s the customers wish. After all, we even have
people here who’ve done such sacriligious things as putting EDIS
on, or painting their E-types Nissan Pearl White? Can you
imagine? I’d like to know how it turns out, and what issues you
face.–

In reply to a message from Ray Livingston sent Wed 21 Nov 2007:

Thanks Ray,

Actually I’ve done a few AJ6 conversions to XJ Series I and
II cars. Jaguar themselves did it with XJS so I don’t
consider this conversion a bad thing per se. On Lumps they
think it’s an interesting excercise but since it doesn’t
involve a cast iron V8 that’s about it.
E-type is a whole different story I think: I’ve glanced at
the 'shell: the transmission tunnel is quite narrow and
there’s a support bar of some kind about where the propshaft
starts: getting a 5 speed Getrag 262 in there will be a
challenge (the 4L80e auto is a definite no); another thing
is that I’m not sure that putting 340hp through a rather
fragile design like this (or is it?) is such a good idea
without any serious strengthening (I imagine the front
twisting itself from the bulkhead…).
If we really go ahead with this I’ll keep you posted.

best regards,–
Arnoud

Hi Arnoud - you definitely should have bought my bits when we
shared the Stoneleigh stall!

I think if I were going to try this conversion I would use a V12 E-
type, because the frame rails are much more widely spaced and the
attachment positions on the tub are also widerly spaced, making the
things less likely to twist. However I wouldn’t worry too much
about that aspect provided the tub is solid and the frames new or
as good as (they rust from the inside out, so just because they
look nice doesn’t mean they are good). Also on the V12 there is no
reaction plate, which is the big bugger you can spot at the front
of the trans tunnel underneath. On the sixes this neatly slots in
the space at the back of the sump and the bellhousing. It might be
a problem as you say, since the Getrag bells are ‘full circle’.
When people fit the Getrag to a six they tend to mount it onto an
XK bell, so this aspect stays standard and the changes are further
back.

Good luck - you’re a glutton for punishment! I’m only contemplating
my normally-aspirated XJR AJ6 swap into a saloon like you’ve done!.

Thanks for the info Pete,

The car he’s got is a Ser 1 1/2, completely stripped,
blasted, new metal put in an ready for paint, so that’s my
starting point whether I like it or not;).
Yes, I should have bought those bits off you; funny how I
always end up at the wrong spot at the wrong time;)
If all goes well my XJR N/A engine will be in a SWB Ser II
in a week or two (if I can’t persuade him to get my standard
4.0 instead that is;)

cheers,

Arnoud–

I was only kidding about my bits and letting the guys here know
that you were not some complete nutter appearing on the list. Just
a half-nutter

Yes, figured telling you it would work better with a V12 was a
waste of time since that’s not the problem you had to solve. File
it away for future reference though :-)–

In reply to a message from Arnoud sent Wed 21 Nov 2007:

Arnoud,

In an issue of Jaguar World a few years ago, there was an article
about a company that put a modern Jag drivetrain in a SIII E-Type.
In addition to the stock frame rails, the engine and trans were
cradled in a secondary subframe, that extended back in the trans
tunnel. It seemed to be a very strong, stiff, solution.

Food for thought as you approach your project.–
