My handbrake doesn’t hold at all. I tried adjusting the cable but
it does not help. I think I need to bring the pads closer together
and the book says to turn the adjusting screw. I tried to use the
automatic adjusting feature by working the handbrake several times
but no help. Is there any way to access the adjusting screws other
than dropping the IRS. Thanks

If you bought your new cable from one of the usuals, there is a possibility
that the cable is of an incorrect lengte. No experience(yet) but I have heard
that the only correct cable is from JEC.

Do you have the removable access cover over the IRS? If so,
it may be possible to adjust the handbrake calipers manually
by removing the cotter pin and turning the adjusting bolt
(assuming that the self adjusting mechanism isn’t working
and there is enough pad thickness left.)
I recently had a similar problem and discovered I’d lost the
friction material from one pad -so the handbrake didn’t work
at all. The handbrake calipers can be removed from
underneath with the IRS in situ but it’s a pain of a job
unless you have a lift.–

I’ve got the same problem, I replaced my cable, and
need to connect it to the rear brakes now. According
to the manuals, I should be able to access it through
that ‘removable’ cover. But how is it removable? I
don’t see any way to remove the cover, except by using
the good 'ole speed tool, a.k.a. pry bar.
How to I lift that hatch? If anyone has watched
‘Lost’ on ABC, this cover seems the same as the hatch
they have been trying to open.
You don’t mention what car you have. I don’t believe later cars have
that removable panel. On my 3.8 you just remove the screws and it
lifts right off. You shouldn’t need to go there to attach the cable
though. I was able to do it from under the car, or maybe it was
through the wheel well. I can’t recall.
